Late one year when I was about six, my parents got the Once Upon A Christmas album by Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton. Unfortunately, when they opened it up, it was completely obvious that the record was warped, and not just by a little. They had purchased it at a store that wasn’t nearby – and maybe not even in the city – but a few days later, we all packed in the car to go back and exchange it.
They did exchange it; however, when we got back home, it turned out that this record was also warped, but just not as badly. My parents tried giving the record a go on the turntable, and I remember a couple of songs from the album being really “fun”, but by this time, they figured it wasn’t even worth bringing the record back if all of them they had were damaged.
In any case, even though I probably didn’t hear it played more than a time or two off the record, this is one of the “fun” songs that I distinctly remember being off of it.
It’s certainly not a traditional carol, and not religious at all, but it’s still a beautiful song with a lot of energy and joy – which is probably why I never forgot it.
In addition to the “Carol of the Bells” playlist, I’ve started a general playlist of Christmas songs that will include pieces mentioned here, for anyone interested.
