    Sunday Gratitude – 5.IV.2026

To those celebrating today – Christ is Risen! – Happy Easter!

And then there are the “weird” ones here who are still waiting another week, among which I count myself. There have been a lot of services already – yesterday, I think I was in church for nearly four hours. I’ve really struggled this Lent; from the beginning, I felt less ready for it than most years and this year… wow. For the greater part of Lent, I believed that the Orthodox were also going to be celebrating Pascha today, and it was only looking at the calendar more carefully a couple of weeks ago when I realized that no, there’s a one-week difference. I don’t know. I wasn’t expecting to spend so much time in church this weekend, but I was at vigil last night, and I certainly had the feeling of moving from the darkness into the light, and by the time the service was over, there was an air of hopefulness and joy there. For that I am grateful. (My brain did fight against this on the way home, though. *sigh*)

I am grateful for the more spring-like weather, and the opportunity to be outside. I’m also grateful for my neighbor who invites me to come walking with her.

I am grateful for friends who take the time to talk even in the rain.

I am grateful for making it home in a storm the other day; I wasn’t expecting it, then all of a sudden, I was driving down this country highway with lightning flashes all around. I don’t think that they were very close, as there was only a tiny bit of thunder, but what a show! The next day, driving down those same roads, I could actually see how high the water is, and I’m grateful that there were no issues with low-lying stretches of road or the bridges.

Time to take the Christmas wreath down!

I am thankful to have had a little bit of time to be outside with my kids, and I’m thankful that they have places around that they can enjoy riding their bikes through, and that they’ve been fine with this “exploring”.

I am thankful for the joy of singing.

I am thankful for the things that are showing signs of life (and even blooming) even after a very cold winter and long periods of neglect.

I am grateful for the opportunity to have been in contact with a number of people on this day, in the joy of Easter.

I am grateful for yet another sign that I’m not alone through the hard stuff.

Thank you so much for being here! Christ is Risen!

    Sunday Gratitude – 29.III.2026

I really hate it when it seems like I blink and yet another week has passed. Somehow so much of this time ends up feeling like a blur, and it seems like all that is left is a growing list of things that should have been done long ago, but haven’t been done yet.

In the meantime, though, I’ve been trying not to lose a sense of gratitude, and to also try to make the most of the days at hand. We’ve had a couple of days that have hit 70F, which has been amazing, and especially as the days are getting longer, it would be terrible if we didn’t do something to take advantage of the warmer weather. My younger son had a day off of school a couple of weeks back, and the two of us went out on our bikes and rode ten miles together, and it was amazing. He also started taking pictures with my camera that afternoon, so I’ll be sharing a few of those in this post.

Broken pier Wind Point Lake Michigan

A couple of weeks after the real birthday, my youngest, in kindergarten, had her first real birthday party. It was a bowling alley affair, and, per the terms of the contract, was less than two hours long, but for a group of 5 and 6 year olds, it was fine. I was completely stressed out over this for at least a week for a number of reasons, but it turned out really, really good. Even the weather held out, kind of… It started raining about the time that the party started, and it was still raining as people left. Had we started a couple of hours later, everybody would have been going home in sleet, because we had a blizzard come through the next day. The kids were thrilled to get the day off of school, and despite the crazy wind, we never lost power. The next day, our dear neighbor made a path for our car using a snowblower.

I’m grateful that even though I managed to break a spoke on the one bike (a different one than before), this happened in a place where I could ride to a place where I could leave the bike for a couple of days, and which was very close to the bike shop. On the night that this happened, I was also able to get a ride back home with one of the ladies from church. I’d never talked to her before, and she’s incredibly sweet, and lives just a couple of streets over from where I live.

I’m grateful for the amazing time I had at St. Haralambos in Niles a couple of weeks back. Not only were some very dear “real life” friends there, I finally got to meet Fr. Andrew Damick in person. We have been online acquaintances (friends) for over 20 years, and it seemed like high time to meet him in person. He actually recognized me by sight as well, which is crazy because it’s been a looong time since I posted any photos of myself that he might come across. 🙂 That was a lot of fun, though.

    Breezy days and kites!

I am grateful, as well, for the opportunity to visit an old friend and just enjoy sitting on the front step, having a conversation in the sunshine.

In many ways, I feel pulled very, very, very thin. There have been a lot of good things, to be sure, but there have been a number of very, very frustrating things as well. I don’t know; at this point, I’m not sure that I’ll ever have things “figured out”, but there’s a path to go forward on, and that’s the way through this all. Forgive me again for the blog silence – I truly am grateful for you.

April is here! And new offers from Lilla Rose!

UPDATE! – I missed this very limited time special “E-clip” earlier! Special for April 1!

So, on to this month’s features –

    The “Mane Event”.

The clips need to be a little ahead of the season, and I definitely see “May Flowers” here! For the clip alone, the name is Paisley #4702. (I thought using “Paisley” as a name for a child was a phenomenon of a few years, but it turns out I was wrong!)

    New Releases:

The gnome with the flower is adorable! He is called Herb (#4704), though it seems one might have to come back in a bit to purchase him, as he’s still in the “coming soon” stage at this moment.

For quarter two, the new promotion is a set of jersey-knit headbands with orders of $80 or more:

I don’t have a lot to say, hair-wise, as the main thing I’ve been doing with hair this month has been untangling the knots my youngest twirls into her hair over and over and over again. I’ve gotten pretty good at it!

To order, make sure to click through with my link; every little bit helps.

    Sunday Gratitude – 31.III.2024

For those celebrating Easter today, Happy Easter, Christ is Risen!

For us Orthodox, we’ve got another month of Lent before our Easter (Pascha). I really dislike it when there’s this much time between the two. On the other hand, I’m totally “out of practice” when it comes to having Easter early. Wasn’t it just New Year or something?

Where does the time go? I blink, and here we are at the end of another week. I’m grateful for it, and that the kids get a couple of days off of school for Easter.

I’m glad for beautiful things, for having gotten to see an amazing rainbow this week, and to be reminded that God stays with us even when there’s a shock to the system, so to speak.

I’m thankful for the house around me and the kids at home, and that my littlest, when she says she doesn’t like me, she’s just temporarily annoyed about something and will probably be back in my lap in 30 minutes if it’s available.

I’m grateful if I can be a help to anybody; and I feel bad when I feel like I’m failing that. People say a lot that they don’t have things figured out, and sometimes its true, but sometimes a person can have things pretty much figured out without having a lot of control over the situation. In that case, it’s kind of steering in the general direction on the ocean until the storm is over. But I’m thankful for the perspective.

Most of my Easter thoughts tend to be attached more to Pascha these days, but I’m grateful for Christ’s sacrifice. It’s hard trying to express that in any way that makes sense, because it’s not a pastel bunny type thought. Last year, during some of the worst of everything, something came to mind that was more than a thought, but not quite a vision, but kind of a revelation that one’s mind latches on to when it hits something profoundly true. And there was Jesus suffering on the Cross, and there was my suffering, and it all kind of came together, and from that there was just this sensation of absolute love pouring forth, and that love subsumes it all.

As always, I’m grateful to you all. 🙂

    Sunday Gratitude – 24.III.2024

(Just a note – I haven’t finished “Saturday on Substack” this week because last night my computer froze and as it was after midnight, I figured that I could update later, and when I went to update on Substack a little while ago, I couldn’t – the page I was working on couldn’t be worked on and essential navigation buttons weren’t working.)

All in all, it’s been a good week, and I’m thankful for that. I’m thankful that I got to make it to church on Thursday, though unplanned until almost the last minute, and I’m thankful to have been helpful to the service on Saturday. And today was really nice as well!

I’m thankful to be seeing a little bit of progress in some of the work here. I’m grateful to have been able to get through the week and not feel crushed by it. I’m grateful to hear what might turn out to be some really good news for a friend who really needs it.

I’m grateful that the snow seems to be disappearing almost as fast as it came, though I’m grateful that my youngest got what was probably a last chance to run around and play in the snow.

This absolutely looked like an angel embracing the sun, and the light spreading out beneath the sun with the clouds. I knew a cell-phone photo wasn’t going to do it justice, but you get a little bit of the idea, especially if you think of the very top there as the neck.

I’m grateful to have had the chance to catch up with a friend – over two hours on the phone! *L* It turns out my bone conduction headset also has a microphone, so it was easy to pick up the boy’s room and wash dishes and have hands free to work, and ears free to hear what was going on around me. When I think about what a daytime call like that would have cost even when I was in college! I’m grateful that we can talk to people practically anywhere for minimal cost.

I’m grateful to be learning things, to have a roof above our heads, sustenance, and even a decent amount of comfort. I am grateful to God who loves me, and that there are people who love me as well. I am extraordinarily grateful for all of you who read and write and interact here as well.

  • Online Forgiveness

    Online Forgiveness

Today marks the beginning of Great Lent in the Eastern Orthodox Church, and practically all Orthodox churches had a service last night called “Forgiveness Vespers” to get things started on the right foot. I’ve heard certain priests say that they notice a lot of people skip the service, and I’m sure they do. Basically, at the conclusion of the service, people line up, often in a circle, and each person goes to every other person in attendance there and asks for forgiveness. It’s beautiful and moving… and difficult, because it’s easy to be frustrated or upset with people whom we know and try to work with.

Mind you, no one should ever think of me as the person who gets Orthodoxy “right”. It was the first time in ages I managed to get kids to church in the morning, and it was a struggle. Maybe it’s just my own weakness, but I didn’t feel up to that struggle a second time in the same day. Besides this, I was just exhausted. I feel really bad we didn’t go to church in the evening, but some days (many day), after a certain point, I’m just done.

One of the ladies at church with whom I’m friendly stopped me as I was leaving the service and said “Forgive me…” Even though the priest had basically just gotten done with reminding everyone of the later service, this lady stopping me to say this surprised me. And then I figured that as I probably wasn’t going to make it to the evening service (and dinner), I should do the same with the people I was talking to at coffee hour before I left. Mind you, it’s not a substitution for the actual service, but there’s certainly a desire that if I have done anything this past year or so, that it can be forgiven, once and for all.

About twenty years ago, in the earlier stages of “online Orthodoxy”, I started noticing something similar virtually, that people writing on their blogs and such would post asking for forgiveness on forgiveness Sunday. Officially, I don’t know if the Orthodox Church has a position on this, but although I found it kind of odd at first, I’ve come around to actually kind of liking the practice.

My reasoning is more or less as follows; when people had a church in their village, their family, friends, and community were very much tied to these parishes, and the people one saw in church were the people one saw in other places in life. These days, not only is that not the case – the people most of us see in church are not the same people we see in day-to-day life – but there’s another group of people whom we encounter, and that is people online. And if there’s one space in particular that could use more of the spirit of forgiveness and goodwill toward one another, that would be online. It’s easy to get caught up in controversies and “reactions” and what-have-you. But for those of us who put significant time into an online presence, it seems right that we’re not just asking forgiveness from the people who happen to be at church on one night, but that we’re also asking it from people we interact with, even if it is virtually.

That being the case (or at least my opinion), even though I’m a day late with this, please forgive me for anything that I may have done here to hurt, frustrate, annoy, or otherwise need forgiveness. Even with this being a very small blog in terms of readership, I’m still very grateful for each of you.

    Sunday Gratitude – 17.III.2024

Wow, I am grateful that it’s been a “down” week, and I’m grateful that it looks like some progress has been made on certain things

I am grateful to have gotten to church with three of the kids, at least. They were incredibly sleepy, but also incredibly quiet.

I’m grateful to have found a number of things that were missing, and I hope that by continuing on, I can find even more missing items!

I’m grateful for having had the chance to see the film “Sacred Alaska”, even if it meant a trip down to Illinois. I’m grateful to have gotten to chat with some people there as well.

I’m grateful for the opportunity to learn about things, because this world is full of wonder, even on the worst of days.

I say it all the time, but I certainly always am grateful for all of you who read this! It’s kind of like setting one side of a conversation free; one never knows what the response may be.
