Sunday Gratitude – 5.IV.2026

To those celebrating today – Christ is Risen! – Happy Easter!
And then there are the “weird” ones here who are still waiting another week, among which I count myself. There have been a lot of services already – yesterday, I think I was in church for nearly four hours. I’ve really struggled this Lent; from the beginning, I felt less ready for it than most years and this year… wow. For the greater part of Lent, I believed that the Orthodox were also going to be celebrating Pascha today, and it was only looking at the calendar more carefully a couple of weeks ago when I realized that no, there’s a one-week difference. I don’t know. I wasn’t expecting to spend so much time in church this weekend, but I was at vigil last night, and I certainly had the feeling of moving from the darkness into the light, and by the time the service was over, there was an air of hopefulness and joy there. For that I am grateful. (My brain did fight against this on the way home, though. *sigh*)
I am grateful for the more spring-like weather, and the opportunity to be outside. I’m also grateful for my neighbor who invites me to come walking with her.
I am grateful for friends who take the time to talk even in the rain.
I am grateful for making it home in a storm the other day; I wasn’t expecting it, then all of a sudden, I was driving down this country highway with lightning flashes all around. I don’t think that they were very close, as there was only a tiny bit of thunder, but what a show! The next day, driving down those same roads, I could actually see how high the water is, and I’m grateful that there were no issues with low-lying stretches of road or the bridges.

Time to take the Christmas wreath down! I am thankful to have had a little bit of time to be outside with my kids, and I’m thankful that they have places around that they can enjoy riding their bikes through, and that they’ve been fine with this “exploring”.
I am thankful for the joy of singing.
I am thankful for the things that are showing signs of life (and even blooming) even after a very cold winter and long periods of neglect.
I am grateful for the opportunity to have been in contact with a number of people on this day, in the joy of Easter.
I am grateful for yet another sign that I’m not alone through the hard stuff.
Thank you so much for being here! Christ is Risen!

Sunday Gratitude – 29.III.2026

I really hate it when it seems like I blink and yet another week has passed. Somehow so much of this time ends up feeling like a blur, and it seems like all that is left is a growing list of things that should have been done long ago, but haven’t been done yet.
In the meantime, though, I’ve been trying not to lose a sense of gratitude, and to also try to make the most of the days at hand. We’ve had a couple of days that have hit 70F, which has been amazing, and especially as the days are getting longer, it would be terrible if we didn’t do something to take advantage of the warmer weather. My younger son had a day off of school a couple of weeks back, and the two of us went out on our bikes and rode ten miles together, and it was amazing. He also started taking pictures with my camera that afternoon, so I’ll be sharing a few of those in this post.

A couple of weeks after the real birthday, my youngest, in kindergarten, had her first real birthday party. It was a bowling alley affair, and, per the terms of the contract, was less than two hours long, but for a group of 5 and 6 year olds, it was fine. I was completely stressed out over this for at least a week for a number of reasons, but it turned out really, really good. Even the weather held out, kind of… It started raining about the time that the party started, and it was still raining as people left. Had we started a couple of hours later, everybody would have been going home in sleet, because we had a blizzard come through the next day. The kids were thrilled to get the day off of school, and despite the crazy wind, we never lost power. The next day, our dear neighbor made a path for our car using a snowblower.
I’m grateful that even though I managed to break a spoke on the one bike (a different one than before), this happened in a place where I could ride to a place where I could leave the bike for a couple of days, and which was very close to the bike shop. On the night that this happened, I was also able to get a ride back home with one of the ladies from church. I’d never talked to her before, and she’s incredibly sweet, and lives just a couple of streets over from where I live.
I’m grateful for the amazing time I had at St. Haralambos in Niles a couple of weeks back. Not only were some very dear “real life” friends there, I finally got to meet Fr. Andrew Damick in person. We have been online acquaintances (friends) for over 20 years, and it seemed like high time to meet him in person. He actually recognized me by sight as well, which is crazy because it’s been a looong time since I posted any photos of myself that he might come across. 🙂 That was a lot of fun, though.

Breezy days and kites! I am grateful, as well, for the opportunity to visit an old friend and just enjoy sitting on the front step, having a conversation in the sunshine.
In many ways, I feel pulled very, very, very thin. There have been a lot of good things, to be sure, but there have been a number of very, very frustrating things as well. I don’t know; at this point, I’m not sure that I’ll ever have things “figured out”, but there’s a path to go forward on, and that’s the way through this all. Forgive me again for the blog silence – I truly am grateful for you.

It’s a Wonderful Life – ‘Tis the Season Cinema

It’s a Wonderful Life is another classic movie that I had never seen before watching it now. As someone who grew up in the 1980s and 1990s, that actually took some doing, since for awhile there, one could practically watch the movie nonstop on television from Thanksgiving to Christmas. And… It is a classic. It’s a wonderful movie and at least as relevant today as it was when it was made. I’m glad to be tagging along with Lisa at Boondock Ramblings and Erin at Cracker Crumb Life for this little project – ‘Tis the Season Cinema – and I will link to their reviews below.

Movie still/promo shot – (not my work) Coming in to watching the movie, all I basically knew was that there was an angel who showed a man what life would be like had he never existed, and that it wasn’t a pretty picture. If I were pressed for more detail, I might be able to come up with “Pottersville” and if you asked me whether the quote “every time a bell rings, an angel gets its wings”, on a good day, I might be able to tell you yes. That being said, a couple of the stills from the movie are iconic, and one would have to be completely disconnected from American culture for them not to be recognizable as coming from It’s A Wonderful Life.

Still from the movie – “It’s a Wonderful Life” (not my work) It’s a Wonderful Life begins as the main character, George Bailey (played by James Stewart) is having the worst day of his life. The thing is, Mr. Bailey is a good and decent man – not perfect, mind you – but he has spent his life doing the “right” thing even if that has meant putting off his big dreams indefinitely. However, he hasn’t done poorly for himself, he has a wife who loves him, beautiful children, and a business that is quietly bringing prosperity to the town and its residents, even if that means that he’s not raking in the dough.
However, on this day, he’s on the brink of despair, and the thought that, because of an insurance policy, he might be “worth more dead than alive”, this man of virtue is at a point where he is contemplating suicide.
Here, we get into things that just wouldn’t be allowed into a big-budget Hollywood release these days… There’s a “celestial conversation” between three voices, one named Joseph, one named Clarence, and the other whom we are to assume is God. When he and his family call out in prayer, Clarence – who is an “angel in training” is sent to help George. This is how we get to the visions of what the town would be like without George, but there’s an hour of the film leading up to that part where we are led through important points of George’s life, allowing the viewer to understand how George became the man he did.
I loved the movie. I really enjoyed a movie where the man wasn’t somehow fatally flawed. No, George isn’t perfect, but he’s a skilled and talented man with a good heard who thinks of others – and the “big picture” – before himself. He’s self-sacrificing. It is a shining example of the Christian life.
I liked the way Mary (Donna Reed) was portrayed. She was the good woman behind the good man.
Even with the funny clothes, the scene with the floor coming apart at the dance was hilarious, because I could still see kids today doing pretty much the same thing were it to happen.
The small town/big city divide is at least as relevant now as it was then. Unfortunately, nowadays, besides alcohol and gambling, there’s any number of drugs and access to all sorts of evil on the internet to try to numb the hopelessness – if one takes the attitude that small towns are traps that one can’t escape.
I love that it’s a strongly positive film without being corny. It handles the topic of despair well, and it’s another thing that is at least as important today as it was then.
It’s interesting that the end isn’t necessarily “resolved”. I can imagine that the bad deed will be discovered, and that finally, George and family have the opportunity to fulfill a couple of those “big” dreams. (A primitive GoFundMe, if you will) but that’s left for the viewer to imagine. It works, because the film is about George, not about the deed that was done, or even this one night of despair.
Now I am excited to read the Lisa and Erin’s reviews! Lisa’s review is here: https://lisahoweler.com/2022/12/15/tis-the-season-cinema-its-a-wonderful-life/ and I will post the link to Erin once I see it. 🙂
(I watched this movie through Plex, which has this movie available for free with ads. We’ve had Plex installed on various devices for quite awhile, but this is the first time I’ve watched a movie through the Plex offerings. I kept getting ads for local law firms in English and Spanish, and the one guy just struck me as so funny with his perfect but *strongly* American accented Spanish.)

Wordle #542

Never played Wordle? Check out my Wordle strategy page!
Wordle explanations are posted a day late to ensure that no one accidentally sees the solution before playing.
Line 1: The lone “P” in the correct spot is an interesting starting point for this puzzle. If the “P” is in the second place, maybe the word starts with “S”
Line 2: Yes, yes it does! The “O” is a bonus. Now to figure out which two letters end this word.
Line 3: One more letter with the “E”. 🙂 What could that final letter be?
Line 4: “K” Spoke! 🙂

Songs of the Season – Dolly Parton & Kenny Rogers – I’ll Be Home With Bells On

Late one year when I was about six, my parents got the Once Upon A Christmas album by Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton. Unfortunately, when they opened it up, it was completely obvious that the record was warped, and not just by a little. They had purchased it at a store that wasn’t nearby – and maybe not even in the city – but a few days later, we all packed in the car to go back and exchange it.
They did exchange it; however, when we got back home, it turned out that this record was also warped, but just not as badly. My parents tried giving the record a go on the turntable, and I remember a couple of songs from the album being really “fun”, but by this time, they figured it wasn’t even worth bringing the record back if all of them they had were damaged.
In any case, even though I probably didn’t hear it played more than a time or two off the record, this is one of the “fun” songs that I distinctly remember being off of it.
It’s certainly not a traditional carol, and not religious at all, but it’s still a beautiful song with a lot of energy and joy – which is probably why I never forgot it.
In addition to the “Carol of the Bells” playlist, I’ve started a general playlist of Christmas songs that will include pieces mentioned here, for anyone interested.

Songs of the Season – Mario Lanza – Hark! The Herald Angels Sing

I happened to be in the car late this afternoon where I caught part of the Mark Belling show. Yes, he’s a political commentator, but he also is very, very familiar with all sorts of music, and I guess he’s been playing a little bit of Christmas music on his show in full.
I didn’t know before this evening that Mario Lanza existed. However, he’s definitely one of those “old-fashioned” voices. Considering that he died in 1959 at the age of 38, that makes sense. Belling remembers him as being someone popular in his grandmother’s time. This isn’t the song that Belling chose, but it’s another that showcases Lanza’s voice.
In addition to the “Carol of the Bells” playlist, I’ve started a general playlist of Christmas songs that will include pieces mentioned here, for anyone interested.

Wordle #541

Never played Wordle? Check out my Wordle strategy page!
Wordle explanations are posted a day late to ensure that no one accidentally sees the solution before playing.
Line 1: Naive – just an “A” and in the wrong place.
Line 2: Same thing here.
Line 3: Now, since the “A” didn’t go in spot 2 or 3, I was thinking that the word might start with “A”. With the letters that were still available, the idea that it was an “AP” word was strong. I didn’t necessarily want to go for something with the double letter, but I couldn’t think of anything better, so I went for it and it ended up being the solution!

Wordle #540

Never played Wordle? Check out my Wordle strategy page!
Wordle explanations are posted a day late to ensure that no one accidentally sees the solution before playing.
Line 1: Not much for “knock” – just an “N”, needing to find a home.
Line 2: Moving the “N” to the beginning worked out, and getting the “I” is a bonus.
Line 3: I’m excited that I get to play “nadir”. Yes, I’m a geek. Unfortunately, it’s not the word. However, the “A” is in the right place now!
Line 4: I guessed that the word very likely starts “NAI”, and even thought “nails” might officially not be a word that would be an answer, I think it’s worth a shot to play. It got me the knowledge that “NAI” is correct, but what the last two letters is taking me awhile to think out.
Line 5: “Naive”. Yep. Definitely a little unusual. 🙂

Songs of the Season – Straight No Chaser (kind of) – The Twelve Days of Christmas

In 2008, a ten-year-old video went viral of a men’s singing group from Indiana University called Straight No Chaser. The song was a humorous take on “12 Days of Christmas” and it garnered so much attention that the group was offered a recording contract. That album, Holiday Spirits, did really well, and since then, the group has been recording and touring. Not all of their material is Christmas music, but a good percentage is, some of which is humorous, but all of which is beautifully sung.
The Twelve Days of Christmas is a tough carol because it can sound repetitive and boring pretty easily. Different artists have put their own spin on the song, but Straight No Chaser’s version has become extremely popular, and the following video is a project the band did recording singing groups of their fans singing the song their way. I was really surprised at how well it turned out.
In addition to the “Carol of the Bells” playlist, I’ve started a general playlist of Christmas songs that will include pieces mentioned here, for anyone interested.

Sunday Gratitude – #11

It’s been another week that has just flown by, but was tough to get through nonetheless. Next week is probably going to be extremely tough as well, with one thing in particular that I’m really dreading. To tell the truth, part of me doesn’t want to be grateful about anything right now. That is willfulness, and while I don’t like it, this whole year has been a tough slog, and part of me is just ready to say “I’ve had it, do what you want to me, world!” but there’s nothing to be gained with that.
We didn’t make it to church today. I felt sick yesterday and today, and youngest daughter seems to never really be completely over whatever cold she has – sometimes she’ll go a week or two with minimal symptoms, and then something will come up again.
But there are always things to be grateful for, and it’s often when we don’t necessarily feel like being grateful that it’s all the more important to remember to be grateful.
I’m grateful that I had the option of ordering groceries online for pickup, so that I didn’t have to drag a sick toddler through the grocery store.
I’m grateful to the lady who saw I only had a loaf of bread at Aldi, and waved me in front of her.
I’m grateful for friends who listen even when things are not going well.
I’m grateful for things like the “‘Tis the Season Cinema” thing, because it’s been fun to do, and it’s been nice going back and forth discussing the movies.
I’m finishing this on Monday morning… The day begins, and there’s a lot to do. If you would, say a prayer for us.
I found this film through a blog, and it’s pretty good. It’s 39 minutes, so it’s not long. “What Men Live By”.

Wordle #539

Never played Wordle? Check out my Wordle strategy page!
Wordle explanations are posted a day late to ensure that no one accidentally sees the solution before playing.
Line 1: Nothing here with “braid”.
Line 2: More letters – got a “C”, but in the wrong place.
Line 3: The “C” went into my second-favorite place for it, but it’s interesting that it’s not followed by an “H” or a “T”. The “O” is interesting too… I wonder if it precedes the “C”
Line 4: There are a few words ending in “OCK”, but a lot of the possibilities are already eliminated… What sort of consonant combination might be left?
Line 5: “KN” for “knock”!
