    Sunday Gratitude – 5.IV.2026

To those celebrating today – Christ is Risen! – Happy Easter!

And then there are the “weird” ones here who are still waiting another week, among which I count myself. There have been a lot of services already – yesterday, I think I was in church for nearly four hours. I’ve really struggled this Lent; from the beginning, I felt less ready for it than most years and this year… wow. For the greater part of Lent, I believed that the Orthodox were also going to be celebrating Pascha today, and it was only looking at the calendar more carefully a couple of weeks ago when I realized that no, there’s a one-week difference. I don’t know. I wasn’t expecting to spend so much time in church this weekend, but I was at vigil last night, and I certainly had the feeling of moving from the darkness into the light, and by the time the service was over, there was an air of hopefulness and joy there. For that I am grateful. (My brain did fight against this on the way home, though. *sigh*)

I am grateful for the more spring-like weather, and the opportunity to be outside. I’m also grateful for my neighbor who invites me to come walking with her.

I am grateful for friends who take the time to talk even in the rain.

I am grateful for making it home in a storm the other day; I wasn’t expecting it, then all of a sudden, I was driving down this country highway with lightning flashes all around. I don’t think that they were very close, as there was only a tiny bit of thunder, but what a show! The next day, driving down those same roads, I could actually see how high the water is, and I’m grateful that there were no issues with low-lying stretches of road or the bridges.

Time to take the Christmas wreath down!

I am thankful to have had a little bit of time to be outside with my kids, and I’m thankful that they have places around that they can enjoy riding their bikes through, and that they’ve been fine with this “exploring”.

I am thankful for the joy of singing.

I am thankful for the things that are showing signs of life (and even blooming) even after a very cold winter and long periods of neglect.

I am grateful for the opportunity to have been in contact with a number of people on this day, in the joy of Easter.

I am grateful for yet another sign that I’m not alone through the hard stuff.

Thank you so much for being here! Christ is Risen!

    Sunday Gratitude – 29.III.2026

I really hate it when it seems like I blink and yet another week has passed. Somehow so much of this time ends up feeling like a blur, and it seems like all that is left is a growing list of things that should have been done long ago, but haven’t been done yet.

In the meantime, though, I’ve been trying not to lose a sense of gratitude, and to also try to make the most of the days at hand. We’ve had a couple of days that have hit 70F, which has been amazing, and especially as the days are getting longer, it would be terrible if we didn’t do something to take advantage of the warmer weather. My younger son had a day off of school a couple of weeks back, and the two of us went out on our bikes and rode ten miles together, and it was amazing. He also started taking pictures with my camera that afternoon, so I’ll be sharing a few of those in this post.

Broken pier Wind Point Lake Michigan

A couple of weeks after the real birthday, my youngest, in kindergarten, had her first real birthday party. It was a bowling alley affair, and, per the terms of the contract, was less than two hours long, but for a group of 5 and 6 year olds, it was fine. I was completely stressed out over this for at least a week for a number of reasons, but it turned out really, really good. Even the weather held out, kind of… It started raining about the time that the party started, and it was still raining as people left. Had we started a couple of hours later, everybody would have been going home in sleet, because we had a blizzard come through the next day. The kids were thrilled to get the day off of school, and despite the crazy wind, we never lost power. The next day, our dear neighbor made a path for our car using a snowblower.

I’m grateful that even though I managed to break a spoke on the one bike (a different one than before), this happened in a place where I could ride to a place where I could leave the bike for a couple of days, and which was very close to the bike shop. On the night that this happened, I was also able to get a ride back home with one of the ladies from church. I’d never talked to her before, and she’s incredibly sweet, and lives just a couple of streets over from where I live.

I’m grateful for the amazing time I had at St. Haralambos in Niles a couple of weeks back. Not only were some very dear “real life” friends there, I finally got to meet Fr. Andrew Damick in person. We have been online acquaintances (friends) for over 20 years, and it seemed like high time to meet him in person. He actually recognized me by sight as well, which is crazy because it’s been a looong time since I posted any photos of myself that he might come across. 🙂 That was a lot of fun, though.

    Breezy days and kites!

I am grateful, as well, for the opportunity to visit an old friend and just enjoy sitting on the front step, having a conversation in the sunshine.

In many ways, I feel pulled very, very, very thin. There have been a lot of good things, to be sure, but there have been a number of very, very frustrating things as well. I don’t know; at this point, I’m not sure that I’ll ever have things “figured out”, but there’s a path to go forward on, and that’s the way through this all. Forgive me again for the blog silence – I truly am grateful for you.

Wordle explanations are posted a day late to ensure that no one accidentally sees the solution before playing.

Line 1: “Itchy” isn’t the most ideal starting word, but the lone “C” in the wrong place is certainly something different.

Line 2: I figured I’d bring the “C” to the beginning of the word, as that’s where it’s probably more likely to be, and I lucked out there. I decided to make it a “C” blend and picked “CL” and got lucky there as well!

Line 3: Again, got lucky with the “EA” to follow “CL”… Not “clear” though? Crazy!

Line 4: If it’s gotta be “clean”… 🙂 Another pretty quick one.

This is one of my favorite songs and this is a very good version, and I daresay influenced by Lindsey Stirling with the violin interludes and such. If only it were in Latin! 😉

Line 1: “Feast” – it seems like old times!

Line 2: Two more letters, but not the right places. More letter-shuffling needed!

Line 3: Still not shuffled right, but we’ll get there.

Line 4: At first, I thought the “T” and “H” might go together, but this wouldn’t necessarily have to be the case. I could make it a “CH”, which would still make it easy to add a “T” with, and considering the position of the “I”, I’ll make the word “itchy”, and there we go!

Another “Orthodox Coincidence” courtesy of St. Alexander of Munich

I really shouldn’t be all that surprised. After all, these have been happening to me for 20 years now. It’s one of the reasons I, as a former Protestant, have no problem believing that the saints live on and intercede for us. I have no other explanation for this type of thing.

It started with a post to the Orthodox Christianity group on Reddit asking if anybody could recognize this saint. The person asking is Roman Catholic, and it is obviously a Roman Catholic pendant (reliquary pendant, actually), and though the poster thought it might be Mary, it didn’t seem to make sense with the rose and the fact that it seems to be a second-degree relic.

I was intrigued; it’s beautiful. I now wanted to know as much as almost anybody who is depicted here.

Since it seemed like part of the problem is that the pendant is yellowed, I decided to take the image and use a photo-editing program to try to remove some of the excess yellowing and see if there was any color to revive. The result came out like you see here.

Here, it is somewhat easier to see that the the red object is not a sacred heart, but indeed, a rose. It is also more clear that the woman’s hands are not holding the rose but are folded in front of her. Besides the red rose in the center, there’s a white rose to the left of the center one, and what looks to be a half-hidden golden rose on the right.

This makes it almost indisputable that this is a “Rosa Mystica” – or Mary of the Mystical Rose – pendant. There was an Italian woman by the name of Pierina Gilli who claimed to have had a series of visions of Mary between 1947 and 1983. Although the Roman Catholic Church does not officially recognize the visions, at least not yet, ever since 1947 people have made pilgrimages to Montichiari, Italy, where many of the visions took place. Although Mary of the Mystic Rose already existed as a title for Mary, the description here – with the three roses of white, red, and yellow/gold – is from Gilli’s description. Furthermore, the feast day is July 13.

Now, it’s July 13th that seems to be the start of the coincidences. July 13 is the day St. Alexander of Munich is commemorated. I mentioned to the person who posted originally that it seemed to be a coincidence, roses and July 13. He wrote me back saying that he was very familiar with St. Alexander, as the wife of his priest, Alexandra Lloyd, has written and published two books about the White Rose.

By this time, I was stunned. What was even crazier is that in our conversation, he mentioned that he’s happy that the cause of Willi Graf to be canonized as a Roman Catholic saint has proceeded along, and that in 2017, the first step towards beatification was initiated, and that in 2020, that preparations for his beatification are being made. There was a German television special from the 1980s that had made mention that Willi Graf and Christoph Probst (Alexander Schmorell’s best friend) would be considered for sainthood, but I had searched for years for any further information than that. Because of being busy with kids and family, it’s something that I wasn’t actively hunting for for quite awhile, but even as recently as about a week ago, I posted the question online in a Catholic forum for any information, and every single avenue has come up with nothing – until now, randomly chatting with somebody because of a post about a reliquary medal.

As far as the members of the White Rose go, it’s a shame that they all won’t be glorified as saints, because I think it’s the proper thing to do. I think with Alexander Schmorell, it was special that there were still people alive who knew him who were either at the glorification, or knew it was happening. St. Alexander has a special place in my heart, and is intricately linked to my journey into and in Orthodoxy. However, Willi Graf is probably the person in the group whose personality seems to be most similar to mine. I have always had an incredible respect and admiration for him, and I’ve known for ages that if anybody is a saint of the twentieth century, Willi Graf certainly is.

A cross belonging to Willi Graf, which he brought back with him from the Eastern Front. (I took the picture before I knew how to take good digital pictures inside in dim light, hence the poor quality.)

Line 1: Hmm.. Just an “E” and in the wrong place.

Line 2: Still not the right place for the “E” and some more consonants eliminated

Line 3: Nothing in the right place, but some more letters, yay!

Line 4: Oh, boy. For all the times I used “feast” as a starting word, and now it’s actually the solution! 🙂

This does make me wonder about the new “curated” list. After all, yesterday was “drive”, and in the US, it’s one of the heaviest days for driving, with the Thanksgiving holiday and all, and today, “feast”, because that’s what Thanksgiving is known for. Just a couple things that make me go “hmm”.

  • White Christmas – ‘Tis the Season Cinema

White Christmas – ‘Tis the Season Cinema

I am tagging a long a bit with Lisa at Boondock Ramblings and Erin at Cracker Crumb Life with their Christmas movie watching (‘Tis the Season Cinema). Last week was a lot of fun, so even though I might be kind of late here, here I go with this week’s film.

    And yes, Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Singing! – (still from the film White Christmas – not my work)

Wow! No wonder people went to the movies once upon a time! I have been to the movies twice in the last ten years or so – I saw They Shall Not Grow Old in 2018 and Man of God earlier this year. Both were fantastic, but both were fairly “niche” films which had very limited runs. I don’t work right by a movie theater anymore, but for years now, I don’t hear about anything I’d like to watch in theaters – they all seem to be blockbusters, and almost nothing seems appropriate for bringing kids to.

This actually reminds me of passing a theater in a mall in Sioux Falls, South Dakota in 2020. South Dakota did even less “locking down” because of Covid-19 than Florida did, and that summer, there were no new movies being released to theaters because theaters pretty much everywhere else were closed. Obviously, somebody had a James Bond thing going on here, but there still were a mix of adult, family, and kids’ movies.

So… “White Christmas”. I had never seen this movie before. I’m not kidding you. I think one of the reasons I don’t think about “movies” as a recreational pastime is that my parents weren’t very much into movies either. This is a movie that is a feature-length (2 hours) “adult” movie with no swearing, no sex, no violence, and a group of characters who may not always be angels, but are primarily motivated by the good. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised, as the movie is from 1954, but it was amazing to watch. How sad that the “family-friendly” romantic comedy seems to be dead, dead, dead. The most “risque” thing here is probably the men “filling in” for the young women in their song and dance number while the young women are escaping the premises. Very, very tame by today’s standards!

I had two classes in college under the theater department, one was a beginning acting class, and one was “American Musical Theater”. I kept noticing things that were mentioned in both classes regarding the period and the acting and everything. The “show within a movie” is a pretty tried-and-true method of getting some extra songs and dances in, and I supposed this is the one place where I wasn’t necessarily feeling that some of that was moving the plot along, but if you went to the movies wanting to see songs and dance, it works. 🙂

I also have been watching a fair amount of YouTube channels about historical hair and clothing, and I remember somebody recently mentioning about how the 1950s fashion still has an outsized influence on fashion and what we consider beauty today, so seeing this “in its element” was gorgeous too.

The plot, like a lot of musicals, was fairly thin, but the characters who are able to work with the plot twists are what really make the film watchable. It’s because of this that even though the movie is set in its present time, and could only work there, the movie is still a classic.

It was amazing to see the treatment they had of veterans, but considering that the film came out less than ten years after the end of WWII, that’s understandable, as much more of the general population had experience with being in the military than today. I worked on US military bases abroad for nearly four years, and it was nice to see a film that depicts military members that do go back home to “normal” lives, rather than being either part of some elite fighting force or damaged by their experiences in the military.

A still or promo shot of the characters in a military show – (not my work)

The Stanislavski method was already a thing then, but it was fun to see a movie with acting rather than just emoting all over the place. And adults acting like adults, and humor that was funny without being gross.

Yes, it’s a Christmas movie, and yes, it gives Bing Crosby two occasions to sing “White Christmas” (one as a solo). Again, his voice is amazing, but he’s got so much control over it (I’m so glad Mariah Carey was not allowed to trademark calling herself the “Queen of Christmas”. She has an incredible voice and an incredible range, but she’s completely the opposite of Bing Crosby in style – she’s just all over the place with her voice, and I’ve never liked that.)

(I also want to mention, very quickly that the hairstyle of Phil (played by Danny Kaye) reminded me very much of Kramer from Seinfeld, and I couldn’t not see that sometimes.)

Anyway, I don’t know if this is a great review, but it’s been a busy week and I was happy for the chance to watch a refreshingly sweet movie (even if I had to break it up). Happy Thanksgiving to you all!

I haven’t read the other reviews, but if you’re interested to read, Lisa’s review is here: https://lisahoweler.com/2022/11/26/tis-the-season-cinema-white-christmas/ and Erin’s is here: https://crackercrumblife.com/2022/11/26/tis-the-season-cinema-white-christmas/. I appreciate being able to tag along with these movies! 🙂
