Sunday Gratitude – 5.IV.2026

To those celebrating today – Christ is Risen! – Happy Easter!
And then there are the “weird” ones here who are still waiting another week, among which I count myself. There have been a lot of services already – yesterday, I think I was in church for nearly four hours. I’ve really struggled this Lent; from the beginning, I felt less ready for it than most years and this year… wow. For the greater part of Lent, I believed that the Orthodox were also going to be celebrating Pascha today, and it was only looking at the calendar more carefully a couple of weeks ago when I realized that no, there’s a one-week difference. I don’t know. I wasn’t expecting to spend so much time in church this weekend, but I was at vigil last night, and I certainly had the feeling of moving from the darkness into the light, and by the time the service was over, there was an air of hopefulness and joy there. For that I am grateful. (My brain did fight against this on the way home, though. *sigh*)
I am grateful for the more spring-like weather, and the opportunity to be outside. I’m also grateful for my neighbor who invites me to come walking with her.
I am grateful for friends who take the time to talk even in the rain.
I am grateful for making it home in a storm the other day; I wasn’t expecting it, then all of a sudden, I was driving down this country highway with lightning flashes all around. I don’t think that they were very close, as there was only a tiny bit of thunder, but what a show! The next day, driving down those same roads, I could actually see how high the water is, and I’m grateful that there were no issues with low-lying stretches of road or the bridges.

Time to take the Christmas wreath down! I am thankful to have had a little bit of time to be outside with my kids, and I’m thankful that they have places around that they can enjoy riding their bikes through, and that they’ve been fine with this “exploring”.
I am thankful for the joy of singing.
I am thankful for the things that are showing signs of life (and even blooming) even after a very cold winter and long periods of neglect.
I am grateful for the opportunity to have been in contact with a number of people on this day, in the joy of Easter.
I am grateful for yet another sign that I’m not alone through the hard stuff.
Thank you so much for being here! Christ is Risen!

Sunday Gratitude – 29.III.2026

I really hate it when it seems like I blink and yet another week has passed. Somehow so much of this time ends up feeling like a blur, and it seems like all that is left is a growing list of things that should have been done long ago, but haven’t been done yet.
In the meantime, though, I’ve been trying not to lose a sense of gratitude, and to also try to make the most of the days at hand. We’ve had a couple of days that have hit 70F, which has been amazing, and especially as the days are getting longer, it would be terrible if we didn’t do something to take advantage of the warmer weather. My younger son had a day off of school a couple of weeks back, and the two of us went out on our bikes and rode ten miles together, and it was amazing. He also started taking pictures with my camera that afternoon, so I’ll be sharing a few of those in this post.

A couple of weeks after the real birthday, my youngest, in kindergarten, had her first real birthday party. It was a bowling alley affair, and, per the terms of the contract, was less than two hours long, but for a group of 5 and 6 year olds, it was fine. I was completely stressed out over this for at least a week for a number of reasons, but it turned out really, really good. Even the weather held out, kind of… It started raining about the time that the party started, and it was still raining as people left. Had we started a couple of hours later, everybody would have been going home in sleet, because we had a blizzard come through the next day. The kids were thrilled to get the day off of school, and despite the crazy wind, we never lost power. The next day, our dear neighbor made a path for our car using a snowblower.
I’m grateful that even though I managed to break a spoke on the one bike (a different one than before), this happened in a place where I could ride to a place where I could leave the bike for a couple of days, and which was very close to the bike shop. On the night that this happened, I was also able to get a ride back home with one of the ladies from church. I’d never talked to her before, and she’s incredibly sweet, and lives just a couple of streets over from where I live.
I’m grateful for the amazing time I had at St. Haralambos in Niles a couple of weeks back. Not only were some very dear “real life” friends there, I finally got to meet Fr. Andrew Damick in person. We have been online acquaintances (friends) for over 20 years, and it seemed like high time to meet him in person. He actually recognized me by sight as well, which is crazy because it’s been a looong time since I posted any photos of myself that he might come across. 🙂 That was a lot of fun, though.

Breezy days and kites! I am grateful, as well, for the opportunity to visit an old friend and just enjoy sitting on the front step, having a conversation in the sunshine.
In many ways, I feel pulled very, very, very thin. There have been a lot of good things, to be sure, but there have been a number of very, very frustrating things as well. I don’t know; at this point, I’m not sure that I’ll ever have things “figured out”, but there’s a path to go forward on, and that’s the way through this all. Forgive me again for the blog silence – I truly am grateful for you.

Songs of the Season – Monks of Svetogorskaya Lavra – In the Dark Night

I was wondering what I should post today, and this song got posted over at the Byzantine, Texas blog, so I’ll count it as Providence. 🙂 This is a Ukrainian carol for which I can’t find an English version, but it’s beautiful, and even a little Middle-Eastern in style.
In addition to the “Carol of the Bells” playlist, I’ve started a general playlist of Christmas songs that will include pieces mentioned here, for anyone interested.

Songs of the Season – Muriel Anderson – Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring

Harp guitars are very beautiful instruments, and they’re also quite rare – as far as I know, those who play them have to custom-order the instruments. As a result, there is actually fairly wide variation with the instruments. In the picture above, Muriel Anderson has a 13-string harp guitar with half-step tuners on the bass strings, but there’s an interesting YouTube video of her talking about her 20-string instrument where her top priority in design was being able to fit it in an airplane overhead bin!
I hope the year has been peaceful so far!

Gratitude in 2023

We’re still sick, but I think we are firmly on the way to being done with whatever this horrible bug has been. I have never seen something which produces so much gunk around the eyes! My one ear is still somewhat swollen and a little bit sore, but even that has gotten better over the last two days or so.
For the most part, we’ve just been quietly at home. I feel a little guilty that the kids’ school break was eaten up quite a bit by everyone being sick, but not having school to worry about was good too – this way, I didn’t have to wake up and pack in the sick kids to bring anyone feeling well enough to school. I’m grateful for that.
I’m grateful for the roof over our heads, and that we’ve kept warm in a cold winter.
I’m grateful that there was this week “pause” in all the business.
I’m grateful for the outlet of writing, and to all of you for reading.
I’m grateful for kids who still like to snuggle.
I’m grateful for friends who haven’t given up on me.
I’m grateful for the overwhelming amount of cuteness around me sometimes.
2022 was hard. Excruciatingly hard. I don’t know if I can say yet that I’m thankful for it, but I certainly don’t want to write it off – there were good things, the kids keep growing, and there’s plenty to be learned from it. God’s grace was certainly not lacking – it’s just that to everything there is a season, and this seems to be a season of enduring trials. We know that there’s also a time for rejoicing… so we keep going.

Holy Myrrhbearers Antiochian Orthodox Church, Bonners Ferry, Idaho, December 2012 Happy New Year 2023!

Lilla Rose January 2023 Update

For the latest Lilla Rose posts, please check out the following:
The author of this blog is a “Flexi Rep/Affiliate” with Lilla Rose, and is not employed by Lilla Rose. Purchases made through this link <https://www.lillarose.com/katja> will earn the author a commission.

January is here, and Lilla Rose has changed things up a bit. Instead of a monthly “DIY” design, this month, they are doing a “mane event” special, featuring a new design (“Natasha”) sold exclusively with a set which includes a pouch, a sample bottle of geranium hydrosol spray, and a surprise item. This bundle will be available at 20% off through tomorrow (January 3rd) at 11:59PST.

This month’s monthly promotion is a free wintry bobby with orders of $40 or more. I haven’t actually tried Lilla Rose’s bobby pins, but I bet they are really good – some of them are just gorgeous – and it’s an easy way to put a subtle accent to one’s hair.
There are a couple of new releases as well – the first one is “big news”, as it’s the introduction of EX sport flexis…

I got my regular sized sport this summer just to try it out, and I have been really, really impressed with it. I’m even wearing it in my hair right now because I took a bath earlier, and I wanted my wet hair out of my face. I cannot tell you how much easier it is to clip the sport flexi in for a ponytail than using elastics. I can also put them in when my hair is wet, and not get it completely tangled. When I want to take the ponytail out, I don’t end up with a lot of broken hair where the elastic was. I really want to try the bigger size, because I’d love to be able to put my hair up out of the way completely with one, though I suppose this means I’d actually have to learn how to do a French twist more consistently!
The other new item being featured right now is “Janice”

I love this design! It’s very classic but very modern at the same time. Man, I tell you, if I had unlimited amounts of money, I might be Lilla Rose’s best customer! 🙂
I appreciate all of you taking the time to read this.

Songs of the Season – Semisonic – This Will Be My Year

Semisonic is known most of all for the song “Closing Time”. I got the album “Feeling Strangely Fine” when they were at the height of their popularity (I even saw them in concert!) and the entire album is pretty solid – much better than so many groups that have a hit or two and filled the rest of the album with filler (and people wonder why albums are dying), and this track, although it didn’t get a whole lot of radio play, is one of the ones that still stick out to me all these years later.
Happy New Year, and thanks for reading!

Wordle #560 – Closing out 2022

Never played Wordle? Check out my Wordle strategy page!
Wordle explanations are posted a day late to ensure that no one accidentally sees the solution before playing.
Line 1: Oh, boy! “Molar” did really well!
Line 2: Shuffling things around – nice!
Line 3: I’ almost played “madly” here, thinking that “manly” isn’t in the vocabulary of the New York Times, but I figured that “manly” is such a fun word to play, I’d go ahead with it. I was shocked that it was actually the solution! The word always reminds me now of Laura Ingalls Wilder, as it was the nickname of her husband Almanzo. (Pronunciation with two short “a”s) Shifting the “O” to second place worked out well. The “L” wasn’t quite as lucky but it’s quite easy to see now where everything goes!Shifting the “O” to second place worked out well. The “L” wasn’t quite as lucky but it’s quite easy to see now where everything goes!

Wordle #559

Never played Wordle? Check out my Wordle strategy page!
Wordle explanations are posted a day late to ensure that no one accidentally sees the solution before playing.
Line 1: I am pleasantly surprised that I got something good out of “havoc”. “A” and “O”… lots of possibilities!
Line 2: So again, it’s not an “OA” word. Interesting. Having the “L” is nice though.
Line 3: Shifting the “O” to second place worked out well. The “L” wasn’t quite as lucky but it’s quite easy to see now where everything goes!
Line 4: Moral!

Songs of the Season – George Winston – Night, part III: Minstrels

George Winston’s album “December” captures a bit of the feeling related to the time of year, the darkness and solitude. Most of the album consists of Christmas songs that the solo piano creates the “December” feel for, but there are a few that aren’t.
One of those that is not a Christmas song is entitled “Night, part 3: Minstrels”. However, it’s not an original composition. A dulcimer player by the name of Malcolm Dalglish had recorded it as a dulcimer piece under the name of “St. Basil’s Hymn“.
As it turns out, the song isn’t Dalglish’s either. It’s a Greek carol for New Year’s – which happens to be when St. Basil’s feast day is. The name of it is “Αρχιμηνιά κι Αρχιχρονιά” and I don’t have much of an idea of what the translation might be in English if it’s not what is written here: https://manitouwinds.com/2016/11/30/winter-songs-carols-st-basils-hymn/
In any case, I thought it was a weird little coincidence, and a neat song to post for today.
In addition to the “Carol of the Bells” playlist, I’ve started a general playlist of Christmas songs that will include pieces mentioned here, for anyone interested.
