Sunday Gratitude – 5.IV.2026

To those celebrating today – Christ is Risen! – Happy Easter!
And then there are the “weird” ones here who are still waiting another week, among which I count myself. There have been a lot of services already – yesterday, I think I was in church for nearly four hours. I’ve really struggled this Lent; from the beginning, I felt less ready for it than most years and this year… wow. For the greater part of Lent, I believed that the Orthodox were also going to be celebrating Pascha today, and it was only looking at the calendar more carefully a couple of weeks ago when I realized that no, there’s a one-week difference. I don’t know. I wasn’t expecting to spend so much time in church this weekend, but I was at vigil last night, and I certainly had the feeling of moving from the darkness into the light, and by the time the service was over, there was an air of hopefulness and joy there. For that I am grateful. (My brain did fight against this on the way home, though. *sigh*)
I am grateful for the more spring-like weather, and the opportunity to be outside. I’m also grateful for my neighbor who invites me to come walking with her.
I am grateful for friends who take the time to talk even in the rain.
I am grateful for making it home in a storm the other day; I wasn’t expecting it, then all of a sudden, I was driving down this country highway with lightning flashes all around. I don’t think that they were very close, as there was only a tiny bit of thunder, but what a show! The next day, driving down those same roads, I could actually see how high the water is, and I’m grateful that there were no issues with low-lying stretches of road or the bridges.

Time to take the Christmas wreath down! I am thankful to have had a little bit of time to be outside with my kids, and I’m thankful that they have places around that they can enjoy riding their bikes through, and that they’ve been fine with this “exploring”.
I am thankful for the joy of singing.
I am thankful for the things that are showing signs of life (and even blooming) even after a very cold winter and long periods of neglect.
I am grateful for the opportunity to have been in contact with a number of people on this day, in the joy of Easter.
I am grateful for yet another sign that I’m not alone through the hard stuff.
Thank you so much for being here! Christ is Risen!

Sunday Gratitude – 29.III.2026

I really hate it when it seems like I blink and yet another week has passed. Somehow so much of this time ends up feeling like a blur, and it seems like all that is left is a growing list of things that should have been done long ago, but haven’t been done yet.
In the meantime, though, I’ve been trying not to lose a sense of gratitude, and to also try to make the most of the days at hand. We’ve had a couple of days that have hit 70F, which has been amazing, and especially as the days are getting longer, it would be terrible if we didn’t do something to take advantage of the warmer weather. My younger son had a day off of school a couple of weeks back, and the two of us went out on our bikes and rode ten miles together, and it was amazing. He also started taking pictures with my camera that afternoon, so I’ll be sharing a few of those in this post.

A couple of weeks after the real birthday, my youngest, in kindergarten, had her first real birthday party. It was a bowling alley affair, and, per the terms of the contract, was less than two hours long, but for a group of 5 and 6 year olds, it was fine. I was completely stressed out over this for at least a week for a number of reasons, but it turned out really, really good. Even the weather held out, kind of… It started raining about the time that the party started, and it was still raining as people left. Had we started a couple of hours later, everybody would have been going home in sleet, because we had a blizzard come through the next day. The kids were thrilled to get the day off of school, and despite the crazy wind, we never lost power. The next day, our dear neighbor made a path for our car using a snowblower.
I’m grateful that even though I managed to break a spoke on the one bike (a different one than before), this happened in a place where I could ride to a place where I could leave the bike for a couple of days, and which was very close to the bike shop. On the night that this happened, I was also able to get a ride back home with one of the ladies from church. I’d never talked to her before, and she’s incredibly sweet, and lives just a couple of streets over from where I live.
I’m grateful for the amazing time I had at St. Haralambos in Niles a couple of weeks back. Not only were some very dear “real life” friends there, I finally got to meet Fr. Andrew Damick in person. We have been online acquaintances (friends) for over 20 years, and it seemed like high time to meet him in person. He actually recognized me by sight as well, which is crazy because it’s been a looong time since I posted any photos of myself that he might come across. 🙂 That was a lot of fun, though.

Breezy days and kites! I am grateful, as well, for the opportunity to visit an old friend and just enjoy sitting on the front step, having a conversation in the sunshine.
In many ways, I feel pulled very, very, very thin. There have been a lot of good things, to be sure, but there have been a number of very, very frustrating things as well. I don’t know; at this point, I’m not sure that I’ll ever have things “figured out”, but there’s a path to go forward on, and that’s the way through this all. Forgive me again for the blog silence – I truly am grateful for you.

Lilla Rose update – August 2022

The author of this blog is an “independent stylist” with Lilla Rose. Purchases made through this link <https://www.lillarose.biz/katja> will earn the author a commission.
Just a quick update as far as Lilla Rose stuff this August.
The DIY (design it yourself) Flexis are dangle clips this month, so you get to choose clip style, center style, dangle style, size, and whether you want left-handed or right-handed clips.
There is some new stuff and some stuff that has returned. I *believe* one of the returning items is the “Roman Cross” flexi – I gifted someone hairpins this past month, and even though it’s a design that isn’t officially a cross, it definitely has that vibe. I appreciate that Lilla Rose offers some items that are beautiful for those who want to show some symbol of Christian faith in what they wear.
The promo this month is a free hair stick with a purchase of $40 or more. I’d never used hair sticks before this year, and I am amazed at how easy they are to use, and how well they work. I don’t think I’m ever going to go back to buns that are held up by elastics – for me, they don’t work nearly as well. I usually pair my hair sticks up, but it’s not even necessary.

Posting this photo again because the pictures I just took really aren’t any better. Have I mentioned how difficult it is to get backwards selfies to look halfway decent?

Wordle #409

Wordle explanations are posted a day late to ensure that no one accidentally sees the solution before playing.
Line 1: One of my typical start words. No help here.
Line 2: “Chump” is one of the alternative “base words”; even with the “C”, there’s not a lot to go on.
Line 3: The alternative to “fling” – one of my “base words” here is “cling”. One more letter, the “L”, but in the wrong place. This is getting to be quite perplexing.
Line 4: Obviously “crowd” can’t be the word because there’s no “L”, but I’m desperate to get some more letters in.
Line 5: The writers of this game generally do not use simple plurals or adjective forms for Wordle. However, the only thing that I can think at this point is “coyly”. Would they do that? With few other options available, I try it and… it works!

Music Memory – The Freshman – Verve Pipe

Life with five kids is always somewhat crazy; yesterday I did a post about Wordle and then actually forgot to do the puzzle. I once had a streak of 104, then I forgot a day, which set me back down to zero. I had gotten the streak back up to 37 or so, and now… I’m back at one. Oh well. So is life sometimes.
I’m also working on a longer post and have been for the last 3 days or so. It didn’t help that I misplaced my laptop for a day or so. I can do gaming posts on my phone, but longer things just do not work well with that format. (And… this post itself has gotten much longer than first envisioned!)
This morning, I heard the song “The Freshman” by the band the Verve Pipe on the radio. I was in college when it originally came out, and back then, I found it annoying to the point where I wanted to claw my ears out (or at least chuck the radio out the window) every. time. it. played. The even more maddening part is, it’s got a decent tune and some catchy lyrics, and so as much as I really disliked the song, I’d often find myself singing along.
In short, the story of the song is as follows: A friend of the narrator of the song breaks up with his girlfriend, and she’s so broken up about it that she commits suicide. The narrator and his friend are so traumatized about what happened that, even years later, they’re finding it hard to come to terms with what happened.
If this were all that was to the story, that would be fine. However, there are a couple of other points of the song that really make it terrible. First off, I always got the impression that there were a lot of drugs involved in the relationship with these three. Secondly, it seems like even though time has passed, the narrator refuses to put any decent perspective on the situation; there are plenty of times after someone commits suicide where the people who are left behind are left feeling terribly guilty, whether justified or not. In this song, though, it sounds like he’s blaming her – “she fell in love in the first place” – as though these relationships are completely one-way.
Not only is the line “She was touching her face” completely stupid, but I think what bothered me the most about this song was still attitude, even years later, that “this wasn’t supposed to happen to us because we were young”. Apparently there are a lot of people who have or had this attitude, but it was the complete opposite of my experience, and adding the line “For the life of me/I could not believe we’d ever die for these sins/We were merely freshmen”. I understand that death often makes us think more about the “deeper issues”, but the line drips of pseudo-religion and complete ignorance of Christianity. It’s not so much that the line is a cheap shot, it’s more like the songwriter used the line as a way to hook the listener’s ear. It works in the context of ignorance (the narrator’s) but from a Christian context, “the wages of sin is death” – we all know we die because of sin, most definitely our own, but also because we live in a fallen world. Again, in the context of the song, it may be like a blind squirrel finding a nut; the reality is that none of us can help but perish because of the effects of sin, but it’s quite annoying to hear.
The great irony of this song in my life was that not only was it popular during my freshman year of college, my freshman year was dominated by a very serious situation concerning one of my best friends. His family life was terrible, and he saw college as a new start, where he could put that all behind him. The reality was that he couldn’t, and he sunk into deep depression. Eventually, he told me he had reached the end, which was indescribably scary, especially for a 17-year-old who was also dealing with a ton of family issues. I had a lot of advice from well-meaning people who told me not to get too involved, trying to protect me from getting pulled along with him deeper into his emotional darkness.

Even then, I appreciated their concern for me, but in my heart, I knew I couldn’t pull away from such a dear friend in such a dire hour of need. This was one of the first times I remember feeling as though I had specific directions from God; that my duty was to do the things I needed to do for my friend (calls, daily emails) to hold on to him and God, in turn, would be holding on to me. That is the faith that I tried to walk with during those terrible days. I understood keenly that my friend was going to make his own decisions, however, I didn’t feel like running away when he needed a friend the most was the right thing to do. Come what may, I wanted to be able to live with and have peace with my own decisions.
Considering all this, hearing this song play constantly during this time drove me a little insane. It made me actively mad. It reminded me of the situation with my friend and it reminded me that I never thought of myself as invincible (quite the opposite, actually) and that I was aware that my decisions would have long-lasting repercussions.
Life has been far from easy for me or my friend, but we’re both still here, and that certainly counts for something. I take kids in the car to their day camp and the song comes on the radio. I sing along a little; the abject hatred of this song has faded, but it still doesn’t fail to annoy me a bit. However, I can’t listen to this song without thinking of my friend, of remembering being so young and living constantly on that edge of such intense emotion. It is nostalgia twinged with melancholy. To think, we were merely freshmen.

Wordle #407

Wordle explanations are posted a day late to ensure that no one accidentally sees the solution before playing.
Line 1: One of my typical start words. “A” is the only letter I’ve got here, but it is also in the right place.
Line 2: “Champ” is one of my “base words”; imagine my shock seeing 4 of the 5 letters in the correct place!
Line 3: Here’s the quandary, though – do I keep playing words to get that one slot (clamp, cramp, etc.) or do I play something that might give me that letter faster (large, perhaps). As it seems that there are only two more words that would fit here, I opt for the former. Alas, it’s not “clamp”.
Line 4: It is “cramp”!

Wordle #406

Wordle explanations are posted a day late to ensure that no one accidentally sees the solution before playing.
Line 1: One of my typical start words. Not a whole lot to go on, but the “F” is still appreciated.
Line 2: Normally, I don’t like to use words that don’t give me a maximum of new letters, but for the life of me, I couldn’t think of anything with a single “F” – where the “F” doesn’t start the word – that doesn’t have any “A”, “E”, or “T”. Therefore, I guessed a double “F” and thankfully, it worked out.
Line 3: Just changed out the first two letters

Wordle #405

Wordle explanations are posted a day late to ensure that no one accidentally sees the solution before playing.
Line 1: One of my typical start words. Good start; 3 letters, & the “T” is in the right place.
Line 2: Moved the “S” to the first spot, but it’s still not in the right place. “P” is a nice addition.
Line 3: With 4/5 letters, this is mostly an unscrambling exercise. The number of possibilities is greatly limited being as “S” is neither in position 1 or 4. “Upset” is my guess (was there anything else?) and it worked.

Man of God has been released on DVD and Blu-Ray

The author of this blog is an “Amazon Affiliate”. Purchases made through the Amazon links in this post may earn the author a commission though at no additional cost to you.
I went to see the movie Man of God back in March and thought it was phenomenal. It’s not very often at all that a movie about people within the Eastern Orthodox Church is made, and for a movie like this to get any sort of theatrical release in the US is nothing short of amazing. As a short recap, the movie is about the man who would come to be known as St. Nektarios, a man who was wronged and much maligned by certain others in his lifetime, but continued on with his life serving God in humility and patience nonetheless.
However, I know not everyone was able to see it with as limited of a release as it had (two Tuesdays, if I remember correctly), and some of us would certainly like to see it again and share it with others. In this case, we are in luck; the movie was made available for purchase on the 26th. If you’d like to purchase it now from Amazon, my affiliate link is here: https://amzn.to/3PMQXQF .
(Also, if watching the movie through Amazon is you thing, that option is also available.)

Wordle #404

Wordle explanations are posted a day late to ensure that no one accidentally sees the solution before playing.
Line 1: One of my typical start words. Nice to get “ST”, though in the incorrect places
Line 2: Moving “ST” together to the beginning worked out well; nice to get “O” as well.
Line 3: There are a lot of “STO” words, though considerably fewer without the “E” or “A”. Stomp or stoic perhaps? “Stomp” it is!

Wordle #403

Wordle explanations are posted a day late to ensure that no one accidentally sees the solution before playing.
Line 1: One of my typical start words. Only the “T” is in the solution, but in a different position
Line 2: Chose a word with new letters except for the “T”; moved the “T” from the end to the beginning. Not really happy with the result
Line 3: For some reason, this puzzle was stumping me a bit. “Rotor” isn’t necessarily a great choice with the two “R”s and two “O”s, but surprisingly enough, it does turn out that there are two “O”s.
Line 4: “Lotto”? No?
Line 5: Must be “Motto”.

Video: On Good Intentions and Being Lukewarm

New video – I’m still an incredible newbie when it comes to this!
