    Sunday Gratitude – 5.IV.2026

To those celebrating today – Christ is Risen! – Happy Easter!

And then there are the “weird” ones here who are still waiting another week, among which I count myself. There have been a lot of services already – yesterday, I think I was in church for nearly four hours. I’ve really struggled this Lent; from the beginning, I felt less ready for it than most years and this year… wow. For the greater part of Lent, I believed that the Orthodox were also going to be celebrating Pascha today, and it was only looking at the calendar more carefully a couple of weeks ago when I realized that no, there’s a one-week difference. I don’t know. I wasn’t expecting to spend so much time in church this weekend, but I was at vigil last night, and I certainly had the feeling of moving from the darkness into the light, and by the time the service was over, there was an air of hopefulness and joy there. For that I am grateful. (My brain did fight against this on the way home, though. *sigh*)

I am grateful for the more spring-like weather, and the opportunity to be outside. I’m also grateful for my neighbor who invites me to come walking with her.

I am grateful for friends who take the time to talk even in the rain.

I am grateful for making it home in a storm the other day; I wasn’t expecting it, then all of a sudden, I was driving down this country highway with lightning flashes all around. I don’t think that they were very close, as there was only a tiny bit of thunder, but what a show! The next day, driving down those same roads, I could actually see how high the water is, and I’m grateful that there were no issues with low-lying stretches of road or the bridges.

    Mourning dove in wreath
Time to take the Christmas wreath down!

I am thankful to have had a little bit of time to be outside with my kids, and I’m thankful that they have places around that they can enjoy riding their bikes through, and that they’ve been fine with this “exploring”.

I am thankful for the joy of singing.

I am thankful for the things that are showing signs of life (and even blooming) even after a very cold winter and long periods of neglect.

I am grateful for the opportunity to have been in contact with a number of people on this day, in the joy of Easter.

I am grateful for yet another sign that I’m not alone through the hard stuff.

Thank you so much for being here! Christ is Risen!

    Sunday Gratitude – 29.III.2026

I really hate it when it seems like I blink and yet another week has passed. Somehow so much of this time ends up feeling like a blur, and it seems like all that is left is a growing list of things that should have been done long ago, but haven’t been done yet.

In the meantime, though, I’ve been trying not to lose a sense of gratitude, and to also try to make the most of the days at hand. We’ve had a couple of days that have hit 70F, which has been amazing, and especially as the days are getting longer, it would be terrible if we didn’t do something to take advantage of the warmer weather. My younger son had a day off of school a couple of weeks back, and the two of us went out on our bikes and rode ten miles together, and it was amazing. He also started taking pictures with my camera that afternoon, so I’ll be sharing a few of those in this post.

Broken pier Wind Point Lake Michigan

A couple of weeks after the real birthday, my youngest, in kindergarten, had her first real birthday party. It was a bowling alley affair, and, per the terms of the contract, was less than two hours long, but for a group of 5 and 6 year olds, it was fine. I was completely stressed out over this for at least a week for a number of reasons, but it turned out really, really good. Even the weather held out, kind of… It started raining about the time that the party started, and it was still raining as people left. Had we started a couple of hours later, everybody would have been going home in sleet, because we had a blizzard come through the next day. The kids were thrilled to get the day off of school, and despite the crazy wind, we never lost power. The next day, our dear neighbor made a path for our car using a snowblower.

I’m grateful that even though I managed to break a spoke on the one bike (a different one than before), this happened in a place where I could ride to a place where I could leave the bike for a couple of days, and which was very close to the bike shop. On the night that this happened, I was also able to get a ride back home with one of the ladies from church. I’d never talked to her before, and she’s incredibly sweet, and lives just a couple of streets over from where I live.

I’m grateful for the amazing time I had at St. Haralambos in Niles a couple of weeks back. Not only were some very dear “real life” friends there, I finally got to meet Fr. Andrew Damick in person. We have been online acquaintances (friends) for over 20 years, and it seemed like high time to meet him in person. He actually recognized me by sight as well, which is crazy because it’s been a looong time since I posted any photos of myself that he might come across. 🙂 That was a lot of fun, though.

    Breezy days and kites!

I am grateful, as well, for the opportunity to visit an old friend and just enjoy sitting on the front step, having a conversation in the sunshine.

In many ways, I feel pulled very, very, very thin. There have been a lot of good things, to be sure, but there have been a number of very, very frustrating things as well. I don’t know; at this point, I’m not sure that I’ll ever have things “figured out”, but there’s a path to go forward on, and that’s the way through this all. Forgive me again for the blog silence – I truly am grateful for you.

    Sunday Gratitude – 14.V.2023 – Mother’s Day

    Christ is Risen!

Happy Mother’s Day! I hope it was a beautiful day for all.

I remember looking forward for the school year to start so that I’d have “more time” to get stuff done. Now I’m looking forward to the end of the school year for the same reason. It’s amazing how much time and energy “just” getting the kids ready in the morning is. Will the kids sleep in during the summer? I certainly hope so!

Mr. Hollands Home Services, which is local here, had a fantastic Mother’s Day ad, and I wish they would have put it up on their website or youtube because I would have liked to have shared it.

In the meantime, there’s a flurry of end-of-year events, competitions, field trips, and appointments. Just a few more days until the “finish line”, so to speak. I think two will be taking the bus next year, and hopefully that cuts down on the number of morning fights about who is making whom late.

I am grateful that the electricity in the family room has been fixed. I’m glad to be able to pay for that.

I am grateful that I could get the new Zelda game for the kids. I’m grateful that on Mother’s Day, I got to actually play it a little.

I’m grateful that a neighbor volunteers to mow my grass with his riding mower.

I’m grateful that although my three-year-old fell out of a Costco cart and hit her head, it doesn’t seem like it is anything more than a bump. She’s getting so reckless in general, if this is a reminder to her not to get so crazy, I’m grateful for that too, painful as it is.

I am grateful for my kids, to know them, and for all the growing they make me do.

I’m grateful to have gotten two “big” things finished this week.

As always, I am grateful for each one of you reading, and for your prayers.

    Christ is Risen!

I had this post ready to go last night except for the pictures. I nearly fell asleep on the computer (again) so I figured that I would wait until this morning to get the photos in order. Of course, nothing worked out quite the way it was supposed to, so here we are just after 11pm posting what should have been posted yesterday. Oh well, we roll with it, don’t we?

I am soooo tired! It’s made getting through the week harder than normal.

I am grateful that I got to get away for a few hours of frivolity. 🙂 That’s important.

I am grateful that I got to spend some time with a couple of women from church who are very shy people – and we had a blast! 🙂

I’m grateful that the school year is almost over and the neighbors are back from vacation.

  • Spring of Cary: Holiday

    Spring of Cary: Holiday
    Holiday poster Cary Grant

Lisa over at Boondock Ramblings nudged me a bit to join in with the “Spring of Cary” a couple of weeks ago. Since my library had both An Affair to Remember and Holiday, I figured “Why not?”. Last week’s discussion wit her and Erin from Cracker Crumb Life was a lot of fun, so here I am. 🙂

As usual, I knew nothing about the movie to start out with other than it came out in 1938. The plot of the movie revolves around Johnny Case, a young but “self-made” man, who meets a young woman named Julia while on vacation, and the two decide to get married. What he doesn’t know is that not only is she super-rich, her family is part of New York’s upper-crust society. As the film progresses, it becomes more and more clear that their vision for a shared life isn’t nearly the same. At the same time, Johnny meets Julia’s siblings, older sister Linda and younger brother Ned. Linda, coincidentally, was a student of one of Johnny’s mentor-friends.

Now, I kept believing that at some point, everybody was going to pack up and go “on holiday” or something, but, the spoiler alert is that they really don’t. There’s “Holiday” in the sense that this film takes place more or less over the “Holiday” of New Year, and then there’s the “holiday” that Johnny dreams of but it still seems like it’s an odd name for the movie. I read later that it was adapted from a play, which does a lot to explain the limited number of settings in the film.

As for the movie itself, Grant and Hepburn certainly were the stars. The 1930s “high style” was amazing – tails to church? Yes! – but it certainly does seem to belong to an era much, much earlier than the 1950s.

I’m not sure, though, what the movie was trying to say. I suppose the best I can come up with is Ace of Base’s age-old question – “Is enough enough?”

Obviously, the person that the audience is supposed to feel for is Johnny. He’s a man who, despite losing his parents early and having no money to depend on, started working at ten in order to make a life for himself. He’s done well, too – he’s got a good career, he’s educated (went to Harvard), and he wants more in life than what money can buy him. Above all else, he doesn’t want to wait until he’s retired to have a little “holiday”, he wants to get to a point where he can take some time off from the rat race and enjoy some time of his youth. He’d like to get married and Julia looks to be part of his plans.

However, Julia neglects to tell him that she’s from “old money” and he neglects to tell her about his dreams for a “holiday”. At the beginning of the movie, the viewer sees Johnny enter her house through the staff entrance because he doesn’t suppose that she does anything but work there. As the two meet, the issue about asking Julia’s father for her hand in marriage presents itself. At this time as well, Johnny meets Julia’s sister Linda and her brother Edward (called “Ned” by his family) and it becomes apparent that there’s quite a lot of dysfunctionality amongst the siblings.

While I am sure that Julia was happy to find someone who didn’t love her for her money or for her social circle, assuming someone would be happy to marry into that is a pretty big assumption. Johnny’s thoughts that there’s more to life than work and amassing wealth are admirable, but considering that this version of the film came out in the 1930s – the Great Depression – it smacks of being elitist and out of touch. Oh, poor Johnny! He can’t see himself working in business with a big house and servants because he needs a holiday first!

Obviously, one of the “lessons” of the story is that selling one’s soul to the gods of business and riches is awful. However, neither Johnny or Linda or Ned seem like they know the “better way” out, to not lose one’s soul in the middle of all of this. A lot of the film is Johnny and Linda (Katharine Hepburn’s character) going back and forth with these issues, and it’s obvious that the two of them start falling for each other.

Which makes me really wonder if this song was written after someone watched this movie:

I’m not going to spoil the ending here, so I won’t go into the end of the film, but I just wanted to note two small things that were interesting to me, at least.

In Julia’s family’s world (the Setons), there’s incredible formality. Yet Johnny is always called “Johnny” – I don’t know if it was unintentional or a thing to remind the viewer that he doesn’t inhabit the same social class as they do, but it got to be annoying. He’s a grown man in the 1930s – I’m sure that he’s “John” to all but his closest friends. What kind of drove this home was the switch between “Ned” and “Edward”.

Secondly, the writer gave Johnny the last name “Case”. Now, I don’t know about you, but “Case” at one point was one of the biggest names in American “royalty”, thanks to Jerome I Case, founder of Case threshers. However, he was king of Racine, Wisconsin, (even before S.C. Johnson) and that doesn’t count for much, apparently, with the who’s who in New York. It was probably just a coincidence, but part of me kept thinking that even the play’s writer couldn’t get past a real “New York” bias.

The other thing that was kind of interesting is that there is a little bit of “political” talk among the Seton siblings and their cousins, and I wonder if they’re referring to the communism or fascism (or both) sweeping across Europe in the 1930s. At one point, a number of the characters do something similar to a Hitler salute, but it’s with their left hands. Some people realized the dangers of both philosophies in the 1930s, but many were enamored of them as well.

I had fun with this movie; I realize that I probably over-analyze a lot! Thanks to Lisa for recommending it, and now to hop over here to see what she’s written https://lisahoweler.com/2023/05/04/spring-of-cary-holiday/ and I’ll post Erin’s review when I see it.

So… What ever happened to April? Things got so crazy here, I started neglecting my email, and a good bit into the month, I thought to myself “Oh, boy, I forgot to post about Lilla Rose!” Now it’s May, and this is what is going on with Lilla Rose this month!

May’s “Mane Event” – which is on sale through tomorrow (May 3rd)

Besides the normal “Mane Event” sale which runs on that item for the first three days of the month, there’s also a really good sitewide sale running for the same time period.

The Retail Special is a “pick a stick” offer with an order of $50 or more.

    And… new releases!

I have not been keeping up with the new releases at all, but a quick look shows a lot of flowery stuff at the top of the feed – perfect for (checks outside) spring! Yes, slowly we’re inching into spring here, despite winter not letting go very quickly – I mean, it’s been a week and a half since it snowed, so we’re doing good, right?

It’s been close to a year since I first tried my first Lilla Rose product, and I’m still quite impressed. It’s also been a year since I learned how to use hair sticks and a year since I used elastics for ponytails. I have had my hair long for most of my life. For a lot of that time, it seemed like my hair had stopped growing, and generally, it would get to a length where the very tips will brush the seat when I’m sitting and not get any longer. Since switching away from normal ponytail holders, for the first time ever, I’ve noticed that my hair is getting past that length, despite “not growing” for years before this. Also, the ends are much less scraggly. Lilla Rose items are high-quality items that make it possible to stay away from the regular ponytail holders in a stylish and comfortable way.

And Mother’s Day is coming up. (hint, hint…)

    Sunday Gratitude – 30.IV.2023

    Christ is Risen!

I am grateful for good friends. I’m grateful to be learning how to say “I love you” to them, and accept it when I hear that from them. I’m grateful that I got to meet up with a friend I hadn’t seen in almost a year, despite living within what is probably biking distance.

I am grateful that one of my kids is taking part of a national competition in Texas right now. His team certainly doesn’t expect to be anywhere close to winning, but it should be a lot of fun, and it’s a big honor. Who knows if it’ll ever happen again.

I am grateful to have gotten through the week. I hate when it comes down to saying that, but right now I’m under so much stress that I don’t doubt that it’s affecting my health.

I’m grateful that the weather is slowly getting more like spring.

I am grateful that a truth that has been hidden for a very long time is coming out. The situation is not good, but it’s not going to get any better without the truth being owned up to. Coincidentally enough, there may be another connection to St. Alexander with it. We shall see.

And I’m grateful for the suggestion to watch the movie earlier this week… That was a lot of fun!
