    Sunday Gratitude – 5.IV.2026

To those celebrating today – Christ is Risen! – Happy Easter!

And then there are the “weird” ones here who are still waiting another week, among which I count myself. There have been a lot of services already – yesterday, I think I was in church for nearly four hours. I’ve really struggled this Lent; from the beginning, I felt less ready for it than most years and this year… wow. For the greater part of Lent, I believed that the Orthodox were also going to be celebrating Pascha today, and it was only looking at the calendar more carefully a couple of weeks ago when I realized that no, there’s a one-week difference. I don’t know. I wasn’t expecting to spend so much time in church this weekend, but I was at vigil last night, and I certainly had the feeling of moving from the darkness into the light, and by the time the service was over, there was an air of hopefulness and joy there. For that I am grateful. (My brain did fight against this on the way home, though. *sigh*)

I am grateful for the more spring-like weather, and the opportunity to be outside. I’m also grateful for my neighbor who invites me to come walking with her.

I am grateful for friends who take the time to talk even in the rain.

I am grateful for making it home in a storm the other day; I wasn’t expecting it, then all of a sudden, I was driving down this country highway with lightning flashes all around. I don’t think that they were very close, as there was only a tiny bit of thunder, but what a show! The next day, driving down those same roads, I could actually see how high the water is, and I’m grateful that there were no issues with low-lying stretches of road or the bridges.

Time to take the Christmas wreath down!

I am thankful to have had a little bit of time to be outside with my kids, and I’m thankful that they have places around that they can enjoy riding their bikes through, and that they’ve been fine with this “exploring”.

I am thankful for the joy of singing.

I am thankful for the things that are showing signs of life (and even blooming) even after a very cold winter and long periods of neglect.

I am grateful for the opportunity to have been in contact with a number of people on this day, in the joy of Easter.

I am grateful for yet another sign that I’m not alone through the hard stuff.

Thank you so much for being here! Christ is Risen!

    Sunday Gratitude – 29.III.2026

I really hate it when it seems like I blink and yet another week has passed. Somehow so much of this time ends up feeling like a blur, and it seems like all that is left is a growing list of things that should have been done long ago, but haven’t been done yet.

In the meantime, though, I’ve been trying not to lose a sense of gratitude, and to also try to make the most of the days at hand. We’ve had a couple of days that have hit 70F, which has been amazing, and especially as the days are getting longer, it would be terrible if we didn’t do something to take advantage of the warmer weather. My younger son had a day off of school a couple of weeks back, and the two of us went out on our bikes and rode ten miles together, and it was amazing. He also started taking pictures with my camera that afternoon, so I’ll be sharing a few of those in this post.

A couple of weeks after the real birthday, my youngest, in kindergarten, had her first real birthday party. It was a bowling alley affair, and, per the terms of the contract, was less than two hours long, but for a group of 5 and 6 year olds, it was fine. I was completely stressed out over this for at least a week for a number of reasons, but it turned out really, really good. Even the weather held out, kind of… It started raining about the time that the party started, and it was still raining as people left. Had we started a couple of hours later, everybody would have been going home in sleet, because we had a blizzard come through the next day. The kids were thrilled to get the day off of school, and despite the crazy wind, we never lost power. The next day, our dear neighbor made a path for our car using a snowblower.

I’m grateful that even though I managed to break a spoke on the one bike (a different one than before), this happened in a place where I could ride to a place where I could leave the bike for a couple of days, and which was very close to the bike shop. On the night that this happened, I was also able to get a ride back home with one of the ladies from church. I’d never talked to her before, and she’s incredibly sweet, and lives just a couple of streets over from where I live.

I’m grateful for the amazing time I had at St. Haralambos in Niles a couple of weeks back. Not only were some very dear “real life” friends there, I finally got to meet Fr. Andrew Damick in person. We have been online acquaintances (friends) for over 20 years, and it seemed like high time to meet him in person. He actually recognized me by sight as well, which is crazy because it’s been a looong time since I posted any photos of myself that he might come across. 🙂 That was a lot of fun, though.

    Breezy days and kites!

I am grateful, as well, for the opportunity to visit an old friend and just enjoy sitting on the front step, having a conversation in the sunshine.

In many ways, I feel pulled very, very, very thin. There have been a lot of good things, to be sure, but there have been a number of very, very frustrating things as well. I don’t know; at this point, I’m not sure that I’ll ever have things “figured out”, but there’s a path to go forward on, and that’s the way through this all. Forgive me again for the blog silence – I truly am grateful for you.

Line 1: My two problem children appear again, but at least “E” is in the correct place.

Line 2: “Amble” did really well here… What would happen if I reversed the “A” and the “M”?

Line 3: Sweet! 🙂 (Literally!) This was a puzzle I solved really quickly – a good thing for a tough day.

Line 1: “Valet” gives me both of my problem children – “A” and “E” in the wrong places.

Line 2: Here we go again!

Line 3: At least I have placed the “A” and the “E”, but what’s with not being able to find any consonants?

Line 4: You know you’re desperate when you start guessing “Q” words. It’s one thing when the gamble pays off, but when not, it looks kind of stupid. :/

Line 5: Is there a third vowel? Yes! Finally some progress!

Line 6: By this time, “inane” was pretty much all that I could think of that fit between the “I” and the “A” and the “E” with the letters left. However, I was not sure at all that I had this and was quite relieved that I got it. I think this was even harder than “mummy“!

  • Gratitude on Sunday – #7

    Gratitude on Sunday – #7

First off, just a note – I’ve been doing “Wordless Wednesday”, but I notice that some people do “Silent Sunday” instead. I like doing a post on gratitude on Sunday, but there’s this sign which makes me question all my life’s choices, because maybe I just pick the wrong thing all the time…

Just kidding… However, if you do want to see somebody who has some fantastic “Silent Sunday” photos, check out Leann Cole’s site and her “Silent Sunday” posts. Being as she’s in Australia, though, it’s already Wednesday out there or something, so “Silent Sunday” comes around quite early. (She has this post about a very amazing and unique Serbian Orthodox Church in Australia as well, if you haven’t seen it already.)

So… The tough situation(s) still are about the same. I’m grateful to God for helping me put one foot in front of the other.

I’m grateful to God for little boys who aren’t quite too big to want to fall asleep on mama’s lap.

I’m grateful to have been able to go to church and participate there, and as much as I was really having trouble getting around this morning, the fact that a lot of the “old gang” of us troublemakers were there together this morning meant a lot. And maybe we’ll get back into a routine of seeing each other somewhat more regularly.

I am grateful for the good weather last week, that the kids got “one last hurrah” of really nice weather… Would you believe that it was something like 75F on Thursday? In Wisconsin. In November.

I am grateful that the kids have a good school to go to. I went to the kids’ conferences, and all their teachers seem to really care about them academically and as whole people. I’m grateful that even though it is, at its heart, a little parish school, they have the opportunity to do a lot.

And as much as the Midwest gets derided for being boring, I’m grateful for things like this – eclipse? Who needs an eclipse?

The skies brighten in anticipation of the sun

Line 1: “Medal” did very well!

Line 2: “Slate” did even better

Line 3: I got really, really lucky with “valet” here! I just kept shuffling positions, making sure that the letters weren’t going to be used in the same place. Once I shuffled them around to “ALET”, the “V” became the obvious choice, but I was still very pleasantly surprised that it was actually the solution, because I wasn’t quite expecting that.

  • The Art of Blogging – 21 Years On…

The Art of Blogging – 21 Years On…

I recently received a notification that my first blog had turned the milestone age of 21. In commemoration, the platform “gifted” me a “virtual gift” for my profile. Crazy, yes? When did I get so old? Then again, that blog is almost as old as I was when I started it.

The occasion has caused me to think about a few things pertaining to online Orthodoxy, the nature of blogging, women bloggers, etc.

I started my first blog before the word “blogging” had even been widely adopted, and I absolutely hated that sound of it. Calling in an online journal was more my speed, but it wasn’t nearly as catchy as “blog”, and over time, the terms “blog” and “blogging” won out. In any case, I started my first blog when a friend of mine directed me to something she had posted. Not only did I find what she wrote interesting, but I realized what the platform did, and I asked for an invitation, and I was on.

Back then, there were a lot of people who were on, and most of the blogs were people talking about their lives and what they were up to. The thing about the platform I was on was that it had some really good groups, and as I became serious about becoming Orthodox and I moved out of the US, the Orthodoxy group over there really became my link to English-speaking Orthodoxy, but also a good number of the people in the group subscribed to each other’s personal “journals”, and so it felt like a lot of us were pretty close. (Over the years, I probably met 30 people off the platform – across 4 countries – so there was an element of real friendships having been formed.)

At the time, there didn’t seem to be such a big disparity, even in the Orthodox world, between blogs being written by men and blogs being written by women. The thing was that a lot of us were generally at the same stage of life of being near to finishing college or “fledgling adults”.

As blogging “matured”, there certainly was a shift. Sure, there were still a lot of people just blogging about their lives, but there were more and more people blogging about topics. As it became known that it was possible to make money blogging, there were more people who were blogging with some sight on being able to do that, through advertising or what have you, but there was also more of the realization that “the internet is forever” and all those early memes – the ones without pictures – “Friday Five” stuff and what have you, were not just there for the eyes of the circle of people we knew, but was, slowly but surely, being hoovered up into databases and couldn’t easily be erased.

Besides this, I noticed that at a certain point, people got busy. For a lot of people, this came with getting married and having kids, but it also came with people having jobs that maybe had more responsibility or required more travelling, not wanting to share so freely online, or even having more to do with people in real life. The result, then, was a lot fewer posts.

Somewhere around 2008, I also realized that a number of people whose blogs I followed were actually a good bit older than me, say in the range of 20-30 years. These aren’t people who advertised their ages, but with following them for awhile, it became apparent. I think a couple of things that contributed to this were the following: I think these people, generally, had a little bit more time on their hands. First, even if their kids weren’t out of the house, most of them were past the age of needing the intense help kids under about 9 need on a daily basis. Secondly, they weren’t just rambling on about nothing. Even if there wasn’t a set “topic” of the blog, there still was kind of a cohesive feel to the place which often translated to the feeling of an internet community. Third, they were people who liked to write, but had still gone to school back in the day when learning how to write clearly and cohesively was still important.

One of the huge changes to the social media landscape was Facebook, which has elements of the blogging “experience”, especially from the early days, but is much, much more visual. All of a sudden, the old blogs that were primarily text-based looked quaint and behind the times. Facebook also encouraged people to “friend” people that they knew in real life, which definitely changes the dynamic, especially coupled with the heavy reliance on pictures.

Facebook is still a thing, but more and more, “influencers” are less on the blogs, per se, and more on video platforms such as Youtube or Tiktok. It is seriously amazing what sort of things people come up with to post. It is also crazy to understand how much work goes into filming and editing, even for people with modest followings. I remember, years ago, when Sarah Jeffrey of “Team Recorder” had about 25,000 followers, she said that she spent about a day a week working on a weekly video for Youtube. Also, Ariel from “That Awkward Mom” said recently that each one of her videos takes about 25 hours of work to produce.

Blogging also takes a lot of time if one is trying to do it on a regular basis and if one is trying to build up an audience or community. That being said, not everyone with something worthwhile to say has that type of time or technical expertise to be creating video content. Most of the time, when dealing with information, (as opposed to instruction) I’d rather read something than watch someone talking, though there are times when listening to it is “handier” than reading (and here you have the blog vs podcast vs youtube thing).

However, blogging itself has definitely become more of a “multimedia” experience, not only much more visual with the blogs themselves, but that blogs can embed video or can be transformed to podcasting… It’s certainly a lot different than when I started – but I also remember connecting to the internet to blog over dialup, so the huge multimedia files were not really helpful. However, I very much feel that I can hardly post something without adding photos or a YouTube embed or something to make it more visually interesting.

Another huge shift is how people read blogs. “Back in the day”, just about everybody was on an actual computer, desktop or laptop. These days, a lot of people are almost exclusively on their phones, and so the experience is somewhat different because of that. My side menus have a good number of images in them so that they look pretty even in mobile form.

Besides this, blogging is social media, but it also isn’t, and I find myself cross-posting content from here to other places; it’s not that people aren’t interested, it’s just that if they don’t see it where they are, they don’t see it. However, I’ve been avoiding using Facebook. There are still a lot of people who use it a lot, but the nature of it seems to have become toxic, if that makes sense.

I don’t know this for certain, but I think that there are fewer people who just follow blogs as a matter of course; a lot of people are working at writing to get picked up by search engines so that posts get picked up, shared, and bumped to the top of searches. I also believe that this is where a lot of the AI blogs come in – they believe that with review blogs that are written by AI that the writing is “good enough” that the quantity will matter more than the quality. But what do I know? I like to write; I’ve always liked to write, and that’s my plan here, so help me God. 🙂

Consider this part 1 of where this post is going since this is getting to be very long (for a blog post). The landscape has changed, but the “blogosphere” is definitely still part of the internet landscape.

    cat on computer
We all understand that cats have always been an integral part to the creation of blogging content – after all, it is “Caturday”, isn’t it?

Line 1: I didn’t expect “unite” to do very well, but we’re back to that misplaced “E” situation!

Line 2: Since I used three vowels in Line 1, I decided to go with a word where “E” is the only vowel, and while I did get the placement of the “E”, basically I just eliminated consonants.

Line 3: I thought that “M” would be a good consonant to precede “E”, and I figured I would bring the “A” in, and the first word I thought of was “mealy”. Yes, I’m weird. It did well, because the “A” and the “L” appear, though not in those places.

Line 4: Since the “A” didn’t go in spot 3, I decided that I’d put it in 4, with either the “L” in the middle or at the end. Thinking about these two possibilities, the word “medal” seemed like a good guess, so I played it, and it worked! 🙂

Line 1: “Rainy” does quite well – “I” correct and “N” in the new word but in the wrong spot.

Line 2: “N” will often start a word, so I place it first, and since there is no “A”, I try to add an “E” at the end. The “N” was still placed incorrectly, but the “E” was correct. Woot! 🙂

Line 3: Being as the “R” had already been used, I couldn’t think of anything quickly that would work with an “INE” because things like “brine” couldn’t be played. Yes, there was still words like “thine”, but I thought about whether the “N” could be played in the second spot, and the word “unite” jumped to mind, and it worked! 🙂 Truthfully, this wordle went so fast, I hardly remember playing it!
