    Sunday Gratitude – 5.IV.2026

To those celebrating today – Christ is Risen! – Happy Easter!

And then there are the “weird” ones here who are still waiting another week, among which I count myself. There have been a lot of services already – yesterday, I think I was in church for nearly four hours. I’ve really struggled this Lent; from the beginning, I felt less ready for it than most years and this year… wow. For the greater part of Lent, I believed that the Orthodox were also going to be celebrating Pascha today, and it was only looking at the calendar more carefully a couple of weeks ago when I realized that no, there’s a one-week difference. I don’t know. I wasn’t expecting to spend so much time in church this weekend, but I was at vigil last night, and I certainly had the feeling of moving from the darkness into the light, and by the time the service was over, there was an air of hopefulness and joy there. For that I am grateful. (My brain did fight against this on the way home, though. *sigh*)

I am grateful for the more spring-like weather, and the opportunity to be outside. I’m also grateful for my neighbor who invites me to come walking with her.

I am grateful for friends who take the time to talk even in the rain.

I am grateful for making it home in a storm the other day; I wasn’t expecting it, then all of a sudden, I was driving down this country highway with lightning flashes all around. I don’t think that they were very close, as there was only a tiny bit of thunder, but what a show! The next day, driving down those same roads, I could actually see how high the water is, and I’m grateful that there were no issues with low-lying stretches of road or the bridges.

Time to take the Christmas wreath down!

I am thankful to have had a little bit of time to be outside with my kids, and I’m thankful that they have places around that they can enjoy riding their bikes through, and that they’ve been fine with this “exploring”.

I am thankful for the joy of singing.

I am thankful for the things that are showing signs of life (and even blooming) even after a very cold winter and long periods of neglect.

I am grateful for the opportunity to have been in contact with a number of people on this day, in the joy of Easter.

I am grateful for yet another sign that I’m not alone through the hard stuff.

Thank you so much for being here! Christ is Risen!

    Sunday Gratitude – 29.III.2026

I really hate it when it seems like I blink and yet another week has passed. Somehow so much of this time ends up feeling like a blur, and it seems like all that is left is a growing list of things that should have been done long ago, but haven’t been done yet.

In the meantime, though, I’ve been trying not to lose a sense of gratitude, and to also try to make the most of the days at hand. We’ve had a couple of days that have hit 70F, which has been amazing, and especially as the days are getting longer, it would be terrible if we didn’t do something to take advantage of the warmer weather. My younger son had a day off of school a couple of weeks back, and the two of us went out on our bikes and rode ten miles together, and it was amazing. He also started taking pictures with my camera that afternoon, so I’ll be sharing a few of those in this post.

Broken pier Wind Point Lake Michigan

A couple of weeks after the real birthday, my youngest, in kindergarten, had her first real birthday party. It was a bowling alley affair, and, per the terms of the contract, was less than two hours long, but for a group of 5 and 6 year olds, it was fine. I was completely stressed out over this for at least a week for a number of reasons, but it turned out really, really good. Even the weather held out, kind of… It started raining about the time that the party started, and it was still raining as people left. Had we started a couple of hours later, everybody would have been going home in sleet, because we had a blizzard come through the next day. The kids were thrilled to get the day off of school, and despite the crazy wind, we never lost power. The next day, our dear neighbor made a path for our car using a snowblower.

I’m grateful that even though I managed to break a spoke on the one bike (a different one than before), this happened in a place where I could ride to a place where I could leave the bike for a couple of days, and which was very close to the bike shop. On the night that this happened, I was also able to get a ride back home with one of the ladies from church. I’d never talked to her before, and she’s incredibly sweet, and lives just a couple of streets over from where I live.

I’m grateful for the amazing time I had at St. Haralambos in Niles a couple of weeks back. Not only were some very dear “real life” friends there, I finally got to meet Fr. Andrew Damick in person. We have been online acquaintances (friends) for over 20 years, and it seemed like high time to meet him in person. He actually recognized me by sight as well, which is crazy because it’s been a looong time since I posted any photos of myself that he might come across. 🙂 That was a lot of fun, though.

    Breezy days and kites!

I am grateful, as well, for the opportunity to visit an old friend and just enjoy sitting on the front step, having a conversation in the sunshine.

In many ways, I feel pulled very, very, very thin. There have been a lot of good things, to be sure, but there have been a number of very, very frustrating things as well. I don’t know; at this point, I’m not sure that I’ll ever have things “figured out”, but there’s a path to go forward on, and that’s the way through this all. Forgive me again for the blog silence – I truly am grateful for you.

Line 1: “Mummy” actually did better that I thought it would… but that’s not saying much!

Line 2: Okay, “U” and “T”, tucked away in the right places…

Line 3: More churning through letters…

Line 4: I didn’t think that “Sault” is a word in English… I guess it is! I figured I’d try it because of Sault Ste. Marie, which might be a beautiful place to visit, but I digress…

Line 5: It’s got to be “vault” right?

Line 6: Luckily, I think the only other choice was “fault”. These puzzles that I solve in six get me worried. Maybe a solve-in-three tomorrow? (I love the ones I solve in two, but that seems to be as much luck as skill! )

  • The Crosses We are Given – Jeff Younger’s Battle to Save His Sons

The Crosses We are Given – Jeff Younger’s Battle to Save His Sons

Jeff Younger is a Texas father of twin boys whose ex-wife came to the conclusion that one of the twins, at the age of two or three, had “gender-dysphoria” and would rather be a girl. Instead of letting the fantasy pass, as fantasies do with very young children, she decided that it was in the boy’s best interests to start “socially transitioning” James into a girl named Luna with the intention of medically “transitioning” him once he was “old enough” – that is 10 or 11.

Mr. Younger is staunchly opposed to this, not only on ethical grounds, not only on religious grounds, but because his son, when with him, has no interest in being a girl.

In a sane world, there should be no questions here, and a mother who insists her son is a girl ought to be stripped of custody. However, the twins’ mother is a pediatrician, a respected member of the “elite class”, and Jeff Younger is a rough-at-the-edges Texan. Again, this should make no difference; the courts should be working in the interest of the children, period. Regardless of what social circle the mother belongs to, what she is proposing to do would have been rightly been seen as child abuse across the board fifteen years ago.

However, this is an insane world right now, and for the past several years, the Texas Family Courts have generally ruled in the mother’s favor. I cannot imagine the amount of frustration and anguish this has caused Mr. Younger. Rather than giving up, Mr. Younger has fought tooth-and-nail to protect both of his boys. He has raised his voice, and his case has gotten national – and international – attention.

Many times, when things seem like they are unbearably hard, we wonder “Why me?” Often, people fall back on this to fall apart, to curse God, to wallow in despair. I am reminded here of in the book Anne of Green Gables, when Anne tells Marilla that she’s in the “depths of despair”, Marilla reprimands her, saying that to despair is to turn one’s back on God.

If your three-year-old son said this was a cool toy, you’d consider it a sign of transgenderism too, yes?

I am sure that there are times that Mr. Younger has been brought very low in this travesty. He has kept fighting, though. He’s been a fighter and he refuses to curl up and die. I believe that this is probably one of the reasons that this has been given this cross to bear.

The thing is, the publicity that the James Younger case is probably the first time most people realized that in this country, there are actually places that are in the business of “transitioning” children to a different gender. It’s probably the first time that most people realized that this doesn’t just include “social transitioning” but also the prescribing of hormones that have irreversible effects on children and actual surgery. These practices lurked in the shadows before this; by dragging them out for the general public to see, millions of people were horrified and disgusted, and it started movements across the country to limit or end the amount that gender clinics are able to do to small children.

The fight is far from over, especially for the Younger boys. The boys’ mother was given permission to move from Texas, and she has made it clear that she plans to head for California, a state that wants to be a haven for transitioners, and in particular minors who might not have “access” in their home states. According to this Epoch Times piece, Jeff Younger hasn’t seen his boys in over a year, but he continues in the struggle. All the while, the greater public is learning more about the horrors of the business of medical transitions, from hospitals bragging about how much money transgender surgeries make for them, to research from various people, including the Twitter user “LibsofTikTok” throwing light on how many children’s hospitals are actually performing gender surgery on minors, to the horror stories of people who have transitioned who feel like it was a mistake and are fighting to get back their lives. [Update: I forgot to mention that just today the National Health Service of the United Kingdom has issued guidance that “most children who think they are transgender are just going through a phase.”]

One would hope – pray – that no matter where Jeff Younger’s son ends up, he’s not forced into a medical transition to a girl, especially when it seems like any affinity that he may have for “being a girl” is strongly influenced by the preferences of his mother. And we should not forget the other brother who is also caught in the middle of all of this. Jeff Younger has vowed to take this to the Supreme Court, if necessary. I have nothing but the greatest respect for this man, and I hope he can be reunited with his sons soon. He may seem like an unlikely tool of God’s, but I feel like it is highly likely that he was “chosen” for this cross, if you will, because he accepted it, and he keeps “stumbling up the hill” with it, to paraphrase Dr. Jordan Peterson. Of course, his aim is to save his own sons, but by not giving up, he’s doing an awful lot of “wider good” as well.

For those of you who are Orthodox Christians, as a note, Jeff Younger is Orthodox as well; his ex-wife apparently left Orthodoxy over this. The situation is dire, but we hold on to hope. According to the official “Save James” Facebook page, it does seem that the judge who made this latest ruling is under an ethics investigation regarding campaign help and donations made by the ex-wife’s legal team. In addition to prayers for Jeff and the boys, they’ve also requested for prayer for Anne, the boys’ mother, understanding that she is being “spiritually oppressed” and that she may set free from that. #savejames

P.S. There’s still an active GiveSendGo campaign for Jeff Younger. This has been an extremely expensive fight; if you find yourself moved to chip something in, please do.

Line 1: “Spiel” should do halfway decently, right? Hmm…

Line 2: Let’s use some more letters… Again, nothing.

Line 3: Looking for something that uses the “O” and “U” and some more letters… Just the “U”? How peculiar!

Line 4: I hate using the double letter, especially a double “Z”, but the number of words that have a “U” in the second place and don’t use any of the letters already used make it difficult to think of things that don’t have a double letter between “U” and “Y”. I feel like I am stumbling in the dark with this one.

Line 5: A double letter seems like a waste again, but what other options do I have at this point? The “M” is a huge break, though.

Line 6: Here goes nothing… “Mummy”. With three “M”s… And it works! But what a tough one this was!

    Gratitude – Sunday #4 – Always on a Sunday?

Now we’ve been home from church for five straight weeks. This week kind of knocked me out; not only were my two youngest going back and forth with this cold stuff, I managed to be sick too, and the one night had a temperature in the 102F-103F range. Fevers don’t let mom stop being mom though.

I am grateful for sunshine. I am grateful for the beautiful weather and the gorgeous colors that the leaves have changed. I’m grateful that even though we were sick, we were able to get outside into the fresh air some.

I am grateful for friends who can be called at 10:30pm, and who will stay on the line until 1am just to listen and talk things through.

I am thankful to be able to really start contemplating the idea of getting to go to Germany again. Don’t ask me how or when, but I found out that all of their Covid-19 travel restrictions have been lifted, and knowing that lifts a burden that’s been there for over two years.

Line 1: “Grove” did about as well as I figured it would. At least we have some clue, yes?

Line 2: Using one of my base words, I didn’t get too much more here, though I discovered an “S” is somewhere.

Line 3: I went for an “S-” blend, and picked a word that started “SP” and got lucky with that. It actually is quite odd that the “E” has to be in the 4th spot. Very, very, interesting.

Line 4: By logic, if the word starts with “SP” and the 4th letter has to be “E”, there aren’t that many possibilities, especially since we know “R” doesn’t appear in this puzzle. It could be an “I”, but since “D” has already been played, it almost has to be “L”… and it is!

  • Music Memory – Elliott Smith – Say Yes

Music Memory – Elliott Smith – Say Yes

The summer of 2003, like the summer of 2002, was brutally hot in Europe. That year, I was blessed to be working a job that not only did not require me to work in the heat of the day, but also was air-conditioned. My hours were such that not only did I have Saturdays and Sundays completely free, but by the time I came in for work on Monday, most of the people running “normal hours” were on their way home, so if I squinted really hard, it seemed almost like a 3-day weekend every week. It was glorious.

I don’t remember a lot about the summer, but I do remember that the fall was absolutely glorious, the weather was amazing, the sun’s rays painted the world with a golden brush, and my view to the Alps got more colorful by the day. I had gotten into the habit of listening to AFN radio – American Forces Network – a lot. There were three things that stuck out in my mind from AFN that fall – a tribute commemorating the 30th anniversary of Jim Croce’s death, staying up ridiculously late to hear the Chicago Cubs not make it into the World Series, and news that Elliott Smith had died, apparently of suicide.

I didn’t know a whole lot about Elliott Smith, but I did know who he was, and I was acquainted with his music through the soundtrack of Good Will Hunting. It’s interesting to me how Good Will Hunting was really a big deal when it came out and how it seems to be almost forgotten now. I’m sure some of that came about stemming from the whole drama between Matt Damon and Minnie Driver that put off a whole lot of people, but during the time that there was a lot of “buzz” about the movie, Elliott Smith was even nominated for an Oscar for his song “Miss Misery“, which features prominently in the film.

    Smith at the Oscars, 1998

Over the next couple of weeks, in these days before Youtube, I listened to my Good Will Hunting soundtrack many, many times. Elliott Smith isn’t exactly a rockstar, and he’s not even what you would call a singer. He sings, but unlike most, he sings to the top range of his voice, which, in a voice like his that isn’t terribly strong, a sense of being vulnerable, or of being ready to fall apart. A lot of Elliott Smith’s original music is like that, he sings as one who struggles with the modern things, not trying to feed a family of six children on a miner’s salary, but more of trying to hold on against the darkness of today’s zeitgeist. At the same time, he’s able to create beauty in large part because of the experience of the pain.

I think the Beatles were masters of using that juxtaposition of generally upbeat music with lyrics that were a lot more depressing. It’s impossible not to hear the Beatles’ influence on Eliott Smith, apart from all the covers he did of Beatles’ songs – from the types of chord changes to the voice double-tracking to his look – but while the Beatles tended to still be positive on the full message, Smith’s direction was much more questionable, and his songs were more explicit about drinking and drugs and hopelessness.

During that time in 2003, the train track closest to where I lived was under repair, and for a couple of weeks there, there was a bus that was being run to take care of the passengers that had to go that way. There was no road that ran roughly parallel to the line, and so the route that the bus had to make to get to all the little stations here in the foothills of the Alps in southern Bavaria was very circuitous. (A long and winding road! Ha!) I rode in the bus, my little portable CD player with me, in awe of the scenery around, the mountains in the distance, the hills, the farms, the roadside shrines, and the gentle warmth of the sun illuminating the green and orange and red as if it were stained glass. The juxtaposition of that beauty with the knowledge that the man singing into my ears had taken his life just a few days before was hard to process.

Not 2003, but 2005 a little further north

Over at Pleximama, she recently wrote a post entitled “Say Yes”, which has nothing to do with Elliott Smith, even though that’s the name of one of his best-known songs. The post is worth a read, but talks about how we should “say yes” to God where we are because He loves us as we are. Crazily enough, “Say Yes” by Elliott Smith has a little of that same theme; by his standards, a “happy” song, about the hope that comes with a girl who he’s surprised may love him despite being “damaged bad at best”. The common thread here is that when one can accept being loved as one is, the change in perspective that a person has is nothing less than life-altering, and with God, that love is eternal.

It’s heartbreakingly sad that there are so many people who do succumb to the darkness, as Smith apparently did. I felt that sadness riding the bus that day, and as much as there are things that I really do like about Smith’s music, even his Beatles’ covers are sometimes hard for me to listen to because he does seem to color him with the sadness he carried.

Nineteen years have now passed since Smith’s death on the 21st of October, 2003. He was 34 then. I’m close to a decade past that age, and neither time nor age have made any of it any less sad. I think of his songs that I know from time to time, but on some level, they’re connected now to listening to AFN at odd hours and riding on that replacement bus through the fall colors all those years ago.

Line 4: I found the place for the “R”, but I’m starting to worry now – even with the number of letters to be used dwindling, I don’t feel like I have a good grasp on this.

Line 3: Shuffling things around again. I seem to have talent in placing letters where they do not belong!

Line 4: Since the chances of the I being in position 4 are higher than in position 5, I’m going to look for something that puts the “I” in four which would probably put that elusive “E” in spot two. This guess also lets us know that the “N” has to go in the middle.

Line 5: This took a little bit of time to figure out; there aren’t a whole lot of words with “ENI” in the middle with so many letters, including the “S” being out of play. I started going through letters for both open places, and when I thought of the possibility of the word ending in “M”, the word “denim” seemed to scream at me that it was the answer to this puzzle

Line 2: The “I” in the middle with no “E”, “S”, or “T” makes this very interesting. Also, an “R” that’s not in place two but not part of “RT” to end… Interesting, indeed!

Line 3: I wasn’t a fan of the double “R” here, but I was having a tough time thinking of anything to play. At least with this, if the word wasn’t “whirr”, I’d know exactly where the “R” went.

Line 4: One of the possibilities here is “quirk”. Yes, there are other “IRK” words out there, but I couldn’t think of anything that wasn’t ruled out by other letter being ruled out. Why not? Just because there was another “Q” word recently doesn’t mean that it can’t pop up again… Hit the button… Yay! 🙂
